Building a space station
I have this grandiose idea of a massive space station. I realise I need to use the CV starter but im looking for some tips on how to start. ive never seen anyone building a station yet so im looking for some tips

Make sure ya take plenty of oxygen and food if your not doing it in Creative... And all your supplies too...

For basic starting, just make sure you level yourself out in space with the "O" key before you place your base starter blocks...

Other than that ya might need to get more specific with what kind of info you are looking for...

Another thing to keep in mind is that you can always move the core later to a cool looking well protected room... so If you are going to move it later ya might consider not burying it beneath a ton of blocks with all sorts of equipment in the way... Dont want to be placing stuff and taking it down and redoing it 2 or 3 times...

Not sure what ya meant with the CV starter... But you can do it Without a CV at all... an SV will get you to Orbit just fine to build a Base...

Wouldn't you want a BA starter if you are building a space station? Unless you are building a mobile Space Station like a mini death star...

Looking atyour reply it seems lots like just building a base on a planet.
No CV? Ofcourse, you're right. Any SV can goto orbit, as long as you have a core. I understand

No, definetly not building it in creative. So it will take quite a while to get this project going.

I was thinking of jsut regular steel/wood blocks (where apllicable ofcourse) inside while using hardened or combat steel as exteriour plating.

Are there any specific things I need to watch out for? I mean Im expecting trouble in from of AI capital ships.

I like the screenshots your show! Looks so small but ill bet its huge when upclose :D

I don't/ didnt know. Ill try base starter too. First couple of ingame days is just going to be farming materials like mad to get a decent start supply.

I think ill just start with a simple cube for production and storage in space and then work my way out. Don't really want to wait for high level to get started

If you are building it in a survival game then maybe make a couple small CV's, nothing fancy, with a few turrets on them and park them around your build site for defense while you build.

So much easyer in creative , no need for O2 and resources are free just type H
There are a few guides on building half or part of station and copy /paste also mirror image .

If you are still doing it in survival best of luck...

Yeah, Its just a class 4...But thats rather large with plenty of room...
Here is my CV Docking station (Spawn Pad) with a 50 by 80 block pad... I'll add my Light Carrier to this so you can get some perspective....
I Usually farm enough material to make at least 10 stacks of Combat blocks before I even start...

Anywhose it these are pretty big...

Easier does not equal more fun (for me atleast)
It's a decent challange yes but in SP the materials are plenty and I'm in no rush.

Good idea!

@nightring;
Nice man! Really nice!

This is my Project Nebula station that I've been working on off and on for a while now. The exterior is about 50% compleate. Inerior is maybe only 10% complete. You'll notice that the fuel, generators and core are all on the outside. I place them in an out of the way location until I can work those into the design. This is being build in Creative, if I were working in survival I'd put them in the hangar bay area, or leave them outside but cover them with combat steel.

For an idea of scale each hangar bay is 11 blocks wide

If you are planning a very large base, make use of motion sensors and switches for lights so that they are only on if you are in that area. The more lights in your build that are on at one time, the more impact the lighting effect will have on game performance. On this space station I had around 40 lights on all at once and I would get massive frame rate drops. Like, suddenly only getting 8 fps. Reworking lights so that only a few are on at any given time I keep frame rates of about 25fps (Thats pretty good on my system). Making use of lighted textures can help to brighten an area without the same impact on performance that lights have.

I have built a space base in survival. I used an sv to mine a cobalt asteroid in the Akua orbit and used that as the site for my base (sort of stuck on the side). Most was hardened steel blocks from the titan wrecks but internall was concrete. a solar array pointed in the right direction provide plenty of power unless I ran the furnace. And although i built a cannon turret to defend it it was never used, I know that alien cvs are in the Akua system but neither them or the drones came near.

Of course...you could always just build a massive CV planet-side, then place a bunch of thrusters on the bottom to get it into space.

Lot less hassle in the long run. Dont have to worry about O2, or drones (assuming you've taken out the drone base on your planet).

Anyway, that's what Im going to do....mostly because the maiden voyage will look so awesome lol. Just a giant ass death star rising up off a planet.

If you're doing this in SP survival take the time to visit and strip down the titan wrecks.

Using one of the defense CV you could ferry up a ton of premade blocks that way all for the cost of a core, time and a shedload of multitool charges.

Using the structural integrity view will help dismantling without trashing entire sections and building support columns using basic concrete also helps shore them up.
