Once I learned about the shortcut into the Abandoned Mines if you have 3 explosives, I've just been blasting my way in and bumrushing the core.
by destroying that core you would ruin the story game play, thats why the admin cored it.
Exploseives etc won't work on it.
There's a switch nearby that will destroy it (the switch I believe is next to the three alien figures standing below it, near the teleporter), designed so that you have to play through the dungeon in order to destroy it, rather than just destroying it by shooting through the block behind it from the outside.
That said, I'm not sure if the switch to destroy it will work if you're not in the mission, you'll have to test that out. Either way, destroying it will break that mission if you haven't done it yet, so I highly recommend you activate chapter 5 and play through the checkpoints. If you've already cleared out the enemies it should just be a matter of flying through a bunch of chekcpoints (first elsewhere, then there on the derelict ship).
And that was a problem for me because it was destroyed very fast (just a few seconds) after the last message, disabling the teleporter on the way
It is worth searching the ship after the core destruction for hidden alien containers
To your second point, absolutely. Scrap everything, look everywhere. There's a whole floor of the base that's unreachable through the normal path, and treasure in all sorts of hard to reach places.
