Copy Blocks?
Is there a way to copy a blocks shape and orientation in survival? I had a rocket hit that blew a hold in my HV and since it was a blueprint I have no idea how to put it back together again. I would like to be able to copy block shapes from the other side and then piece it back together again. Is this possible in Survival?

Start a creative game, study the damaged area, then load your game up again. What you want is supported in the game, but only in creative mode, and that is intentional. You can cheat and swap modes briefly, but that's really cheating.

I almost never use other people's blueprints, so have not had this kind of issue. Although I have had to employ this reload creative, and reload my game trick to recall what I did build. But I do play the game with a very weird "difficulty" setup, so most workshop ships tend not to work well for me.

Thought not. Thanks for the reply. Other similar games have this function. I wonder when it will dawn on the devs that doing giant 3 dimensional jigsaw puzzles isn't fun? Currently I either spend hours bored out of my mind rotating blocks, spend a few hours grinding resources to replace a cosmetically damaged craft, or cheat in a repair bay and all the power resources. Its surely an oversight to increase the complexity of block shapes, and stretch out the early game and yet still provide no quality of life tools for repairing ships until late game.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

t2 repair bay can repair lost blocks later but only if you save template sitting in any structure hit P button and its at bottom left side works seperate from building templates.

Thanks zaphodikus. I don't really see why that would be classed as cheating. The ability to copy a blocks pattern shape and paint strikes me as simply a QoL tool, I don't see what advantage it confers on the player other than avoiding wasting hours playing 3 dimensional tetris. It makes no difference to the AI if my ship has mismatched blocks, its just affects my enjoyment of the game. And if you want to impose such hair-shirt restrictions on players why allow blueprints in the first place? Its far more cheaty to just dump a load of resources into the factory and pop someone else's solutions to the games mechanics into existence.

Workshop --> consumerism? We're also consuming by buying and playing the game instead of crafting our own to our own precise specifications. That's tantamount to cheating.

It's not cheating per se, its just tempting to always dip into the creative item menu for some spare magnesium.

It would be nice to be able to identify what block shape name is under your cursor. Many is the time, I have been unable to find the one I wanted because the orientation in the icon doesn't look anything like the shape I need. It's the problem of trying to depict a 3D shape in a 2D icon.

Not really, It's called having no ability to make a decent looking design yourself. I can design a mobile brick with all the stuff I need with the same resources as the workshop one uses, or I can put those resources into the factory and have the exact same thing, but far better looking.

You CAN see that, if you use the console di command and point at a block, with or without a multitool in hand.

It's not as hard as they've made it with the coloring and virtual lack of texturing and shading.

Seems a bit of a cheat to have to use the console and I'm sure admins can disable the console so you can't use it on some servers.
Would be nice to have the shape description when you point the multitool at it, since it already says what material it is.

Good Grief, new to the game and this is hard to believe. I was trying to remove a block but destroyed it by mistake but the other side has it and I tried literally for 3 hrs and could not find it.

Is this thread suggesting that I have to rebuild a new ship because I can't find a block.

one way is save template before damage and then goto a station and repair. or base with repair block thing and mats to repair

What's the command?

It's "di".

There is a way now to copy the block as well. I believe it is CTRL right click?. Have to look in the keybinds but think that is it. and you can also copy direction but do not remember that one, again look in your keybinds in settings.
