Asteroids as hosts to structures?
Have asteroids become usable as hosts to player bases?

That would make for some cool bases!

Sort of. It's entirely possible but needs a custom scenario for now:

Great... the one sort of modding that I've yet to learn how to do. :-/

And you did the effective reverse, embedding ore inside of vehicles? Sheesh.

Is this all specific only to dedicated servers?

I'm a little bit reluctant to even try going down this road. Though I could see myself creating my own scenario or custom game universe eventually when the game is released and stable, to take advantage of these features excluded from the basic blueprinting system, I hesitate to try it now knowing that every patch is guaranteed to make it obsolete (they always muck with playfield files even when they leave ECF data untouched).

I would much rather they stop holding it back from basic blueprinting and let ALL of us take advantage of the capability now, with every base blueprint. As it is now, I'd be forced to create custom POIs as bases and pre-place them in the game world. Knowing they would already exist and where, it would be far too easy to simply say "awww frack it" and go move into one of them with no effort required.

There's already a few added to my project eden scenario and I'll be adding a lot more. You're always welcome to use my playfield templates and POIs as a starting point for your own custom space playfields too.

You can probably make a custom scenario for single player and randomly place default asteroids set as bases that can be claimed and built on by the player without even needing to use any custom blueprints. The asteroids will show up in game as neutral bases and not resource asteroids on the map though.

So... asteroids are not actually treated as terrain by the game, then, but rather as blocks of a type?

I tried a little experiment: I was able to place a base starter ON a non-resource asteroid, but I wasn't able to drill into it.

Sounds to me like that base starter is just a vanilla space station that happens to coincide with that roid?

Resource asteroids (not the random non-drill able ones) are blueprints made up of actual blocks of rock or ore. That's why you can manipulate them with the copy and paste tool in creative mode if they are spawned as a base instead of as an asteroid.

I didn't try my experiment with a resource asteroid. Base blocks are likely to merge with resource asteroids? I'm shocked that I never even attempted it before now.

I don't know if you can build onto a resource asteroid in a default playfield. You can in a custom playfield if said resource asteroid is spawned as a base instead of an asteroid.

Though you should be able to build your base on top of a resource asteroid, you just won't get the benefit of having the rock be airtight.

None of us have ever had that benefit, so why should I expect it now? At least building on an asteroid enlarges the sandbox in the prison cage slightly.

The asteroid and cave blueprints included in my guide have airtight rock. :)

I wish I had access to them, then. I have long refused to create an account at Eleon's site, and can't even view attached screenshots much less download things without one.

Found this, though:

You can log in using your Steam account. It's the best place to get help and info on how to create custom scenarios.
