That would make for some cool bases!

And you did the effective reverse, embedding ore inside of vehicles? Sheesh.
Is this all specific only to dedicated servers?
I would much rather they stop holding it back from basic blueprinting and let ALL of us take advantage of the capability now, with every base blueprint. As it is now, I'd be forced to create custom POIs as bases and pre-place them in the game world. Knowing they would already exist and where, it would be far too easy to simply say "awww frack it" and go move into one of them with no effort required.
You can probably make a custom scenario for single player and randomly place default asteroids set as bases that can be claimed and built on by the player without even needing to use any custom blueprints. The asteroids will show up in game as neutral bases and not resource asteroids on the map though.
I tried a little experiment: I was able to place a base starter ON a non-resource asteroid, but I wasn't able to drill into it.
Sounds to me like that base starter is just a vanilla space station that happens to coincide with that roid?
Resource asteroids (not the random non-drill able ones) are blueprints made up of actual blocks of rock or ore. That's why you can manipulate them with the copy and paste tool in creative mode if they are spawned as a base instead of as an asteroid.
Though you should be able to build your base on top of a resource asteroid, you just won't get the benefit of having the rock be airtight.
The asteroid and cave blueprints included in my guide have airtight rock. :)
Found this, though:
