Merlin
Really it depends on the planet. You may not need a ventilator or grow light for plants to grow. You will definitely need them on inhospitable planets and space faring cvs to keep plants alive.
Grow lights go one block above the plant. If you can't place the growlight it's designed wrong. If your ceiling is too high you need a post coming down to hold the light. You only want 2 block spaces between the floor and the ceiling, the plant fills the bottom space and the light fills the top space. The light will then illuminate the 9 squares below and immediately around it.
if the temp drops to low they can die
if you get too much radiation they can die
in addition they may grow slower because they may 'suspend' growth during night time and/or when the temp or radiation is in the 'middle area' between death and growable numbers
so really it is best to have grow lights even if you have to add more solar or even a seperate base (with its own solar or w/e) for them, but not an absolute necessity
Just a minor correction: It's a 3X3 area for a total of 9 blocks.
