Do I really need a grow light?
So, I made a greenhouse using airtight windows and the plants have been growing. I made a grow light and tried to place it and I apprently can't place it on the windows at all and I can't place it on the floor by the wall/window. Can't place it on the glass ceiling. I can place it in in the middle floor but it's super bright and blinding. Do I actually need this thing?

The answer to your question is Yes! 1st rule of building anything in this game is "Everything" takes up a 1x1x1 square block! When placing window always make sure the empty part of the block is pointed away from the main area you area wotking on. Also your plants take up a 1x1x1 block as well so you need to make sure the celling is 2 block off the floor inorder to place the grow light above the grow plot. The grow light will cover a 9x9 block area. Hope this helps!

Well that's just the problem. I have it facing the correct way but I still can't place the grow light. I can put the grow light in mid-air but I can't attach it to anything.

You have designed it wrong if you cant attach a grow light. It should go grow pot, plant, light then the structure for holding the light. The plant takes a block up.

Meh, I am happy with how it came out anyways. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1476084747

Hi em!

Really it depends on the planet. You may not need a ventilator or grow light for plants to grow. You will definitely need them on inhospitable planets and space faring cvs to keep plants alive.

Grow lights go one block above the plant. If you can't place the growlight it's designed wrong. If your ceiling is too high you need a post coming down to hold the light. You only want 2 block spaces between the floor and the ceiling, the plant fills the bottom space and the light fills the top space. The light will then illuminate the 9 squares below and immediately around it.

I am just harvesting fiberplants from growpots on the outside of my station on Yeudoi (temperate, -7 - 43°C, Atmosphere 1,4 kg/m3), no lights but the sun, no walls, planet atmosphere. I read somewhere, that plants growing wild on a planet can be grown that way and tryed it, since my solar panels have problems to support both: fridge and plant light.

it is possible to grow outside or without a light on temperate breathable planets but ...
if the temp drops to low they can die
if you get too much radiation they can die
in addition they may grow slower because they may 'suspend' growth during night time and/or when the temp or radiation is in the 'middle area' between death and growable numbers
so really it is best to have grow lights even if you have to add more solar or even a seperate base (with its own solar or w/e) for them, but not an absolute necessity

So far I am not having any problems with them growing the way things are set up. I am however really hoping they change the way walls are. I feel it's weird not being able to place things against a wall on both sides, if you know what I mean. I understand how they work but I still don't like it.

Just a minor correction: It's a 3X3 area for a total of 9 blocks.
