just not underwater for very long, and remember to hit '0' before entering the water... lest ye will sink like a rock.
lastly to actually answer your question, you cant construct a light suit until you unlock it in the tech tree and build a survival constructor.... or you get lucky and come across an outpost and happen to find a suit.
good luck
In order to swim your hands must be empty, and i often have to bump the jump button to stay on the surface.
general rule of thumb is, if you can clearly see the bottom... you should be good.
The heavy armor I highly recommend. It's got 4 mod slots! 4x multi handles almost anything, with the EVA mod covering the most common exception.
I imagine 4x pure temperature mods would be best on lava worlds, but even those worlds have a wide range of temperatures across their surfaces, so with 4x multi you can still get a lot done.
Call me insane but I recently tried MP for the fist time, and chose the hard stater world. Wound up there was NO vegitation or water on the starter world. There were Promethium surface rocks and Pentaxid crystals thankfully. Wound up taking Abandoned mine with a survival tool and explosives. But it got me enough resources to get off plannet.
