Step by step:
place an SV starter block on the floor
add 7 (or whatever) blocks in front and behind and 2 (or whatever) blocks left and right to form a long rectangle
add 1 thruster to front/rear/left/right facing in each direction (doesn't matter where we'll remove them in a minute)
add 1 thruster pointing up and another pointing down (doesn't matter where we'll remove them in a minute)
stick an open cockpit on somewhere near the middle
place a generator and a fuel tank on behind the cockpit seat
add 1 fuel pack
sit in seat and switch on
lift the whole platform by about 5 blocks in height
leave it hovering and jump out of the seat
point at the sv with the mouse-cursor and press P
switch off the power using the main menu switch (in the P menu)
your platform is now hovering above the ground
remove the generator/fuel-tank/cockpit/thrusters
At this point i switch to drone as it's easier to 'fly' around than walk.
Looking from the top (with the drone) start to build the rough shape of the 'plan view'.
Once this is starting to look like you want it move to the side
Looking from the side start to build the side profile
As it progresses you should get an idea what type of cockpit you can use and where the thrusters can fit etc
Start with one of the prefab cockpit modules, you can progress to using glass/pilots-seats once you nail the basics.
A tip: blocks that were designed to 'fit together' are in the same orietation. For example on the top row there is a small pointy one, call that number 1 working to your left there is a number 2 then 3 then 4. If you align number one and lay 2,3 & 4 next to it you will form a four block point. This also occurrs with some of the other blocks so look for it in your building.
Good luck :)
There is no "right" way.
Make some ugly ships (PVE) and learn the rules of shipbuilding
Then learn to build shapes that look not bad
Then build again ugly PVP Ships
and then start in the kings disziplin and try to make nice PVP ships
And never take the optic of good looking Workshop ships as measure.
They are nearly all full of flaws and mostly not usable in a game with hard difficult settings

Ok, if you don't want it to be a cube use the angle blocks when you right click, and angle it up in the front, or sides.
Maybe you can draw a ship, and someone will make it for you, and put it in the workshop? XD
now how can i do the sides and rear..
