How do i use the hand held scanner or the actual visor scanner?

You just need to have them in your inventory. Yes, they do work.

any ore nodes i thought the handheld use to be for long distance scanning and the visor was up close mining

No, you are almost right. The visor does show ore nodules, but only when you have a drill equipped, and the range is not very far. Using the visor will only show nodules of prometheum and erestrum. (They are the only 'nodule' types currently).

The handheld is similar to the detectors for HV and SV. They will show an 'anomoly', (ore body or POI), in one of the four cardinal directions as shown on your radar. (upper right corner).

Im sure someone else will chime in to explain better.
