It takes less time to build something in the early game than it takes to browse the workshop looking for stuff.
Using workshop blueprints often means rebuilding the design when something isn't right. You can spend as much time tracking down why there isn't O2 in this section or why that other section isn't air-tight as building your own construct. Obviously, building your own stuff means you know how all the systems go together and where to look when something isn't right.
My selfish reason for encouraging you to build is easy: You won't get better at building stuff if you don't do it. If you DO, maybe you get real good and post up some killer designs to the workshop yourself that I can dl ;)
Here is a simple Level 7 SV that you can rework some:

With loads of cargo space for starting up, an O2 station and a constructor, built from the basic 3 ores plus some Cobalt (no Sathium), it makes for a great little helper to get you started.
Also, most default prefabs come from a time where concrete was much easier to make as stone dust was a byproduct from mining. Try making a wood base in creative so you can place it quickly.
The default prefab SVs are quite decent. When you finally get to level 10, the Dive 1 CV is very nice and cheap.

Another way is to build a chassis which you'll add to as you progress in the tech tree.
I have found that my needs and desires seem to change faster than the mood of a bipolar schitzophrenic with multiple personality disorder.
It also matters if you have weights and measures turned on. That is done is the game settings when you create a new game.
So with all that to consider I have started building my own stuff. I am currently working on a unlock 7 size 1 HV. I am trying to work out the weights and measures part of the thing. I am currently on the Mark IV revision and it still is not good enough. But it is fun building and testing.
The prefab vehicles and bases need much better descriptions letting you know how good its parts are.
