Right click -> Properties -> Betas, choose "experimental" from drop-down menu.
So if you opt in don't get mad and go ranting about a crap game when things don't work like some people have been doing. If you can handle that then opt in, and have fun. It can be pretty cool being involved in this part of game development.
Steam will automatically update the game. It will do this by default unless you configure this feature to set times in Steam/Settings.
The beta option is for experimental testing of implementations to a new version and this is for the purpose gaining feedback from participants. It is not an official new version until testing has been completed and released as stable. Inherent bugs and inconsistencies with an experimental build are to be expected and these will be discovered and patched as testing progresses. Therefore there will be a lot of patching and fixing, meaning that gameplay and saves may be interrupted on a daily or weekly basis. Once it is released to the stable branch, 'normal' gameplay and saves may be relied upon.
