Are trees a renewable resource?
Or are they simply gone as you cut them down or accidentally slam your HV into them at high speed? Do they ever grow back?

Currently they do not regrow. This quite complicated as we need to keep track of EACH and every plant on all playfields = data overhead/performance drop.

We though of letting players grow trees (for wood and maybe other stuff) in growing plots...not sure if this would make sense.

Your thoughts?

It could be quite nice, actually, to be able to grow our own forest, and it could make sense. And to prevent grinding, it can be quite realistic, with a very long time to grow. The joy to watch our tree grow in our garden... ;) And growing some trees to make a park inside some huge ships could be quite fun.
But since, at a stage, we mostly use iron, it may not really be justified. Don't know.

Growing trees in plots could be doable. But honestly my concern is more for the planet than anything else.

After enough bad driving, rockets, etc... you can get quite a torn up landscape: craters and charred blasted soil everywhere. Which I love, btw... the first time I ever played this game and some alien base's turret left craters... and then started BLOWING AWAY THE CREST OF THE RIDGE I was hiding behind was pure magic... deadly magic... but magic all the same. I was actually sad when the craters from weapons got toned down, lol.

But anyhoo... no real way to restore a world's wild beauty is a bit sad. But I understand if it's not a feasible thing. Even a console command to "refresh" the trees would be great, although is that even possible when you have a seed-based thing and morphable terrain? Wouldn't want to end up with trees floating in the air where a hill used to be, lol.

Or make it like in 7DTD. When you harvest a tree you get two seeds to (re-)plant the tree.
And they should grow really slow.

I'd love to get my Appleseed on.

The trees. Not the mechas.

Although if they want to add walking mechas to Empyrion... zomg.

I would say make a special fertile ground that is only achievable through crafting which you can then place down anywhere on the ground for trees to grow on so you could keep track of only these trees

LOL but sometimes they are !

If you restart server sometimes they re-appear !

Yea bug though ! But still !

instead of planting or tracking individual trees it could be easier to have a mesh. Only grow tree's within the given mesh area on fertile/green ground with a quick elevation. This way it could be both planted by the player as well as checking against those meshes for a replant/redraw for the system. This could be manipulated in many ways for future development.

Just my thoughts.

I don't know enough to offer an opinion on the feasibility of Sohji's comment but I like the idea of it :D I'd love to "paint" in some tree spawning areas.

I think of Easter Island and Ireland and shed a tear every time I cut down a tree in this game.

There's already the biome system. How about a process per planet that goes about replanting trees or regenerating features? Every x seconds it picks random coords and if the biome has trees, pick a spot on the ground, check if there's any trees nearby and if any player bases are nearby. If both are false, spawn a tree there. Over time the forests will fill with trees if there are no bases there. You could even use something similar to regenerate ores slowly over time. If the planet has less than 50% of original ores. Pick a random coord, check for biome, nearby deposits or bases and spawn a new ore deposit there.

That would be very cool! Please add that to the game! :)

You could have one or two types of trees only that can be used, and or grown and used. Less overhead and then people grow their own once set up.

Trees in growing plots is a good idea but what might be better is a new type of Pot to put the tree in, one more like the deco ones, only make it placeable on terrain like the water generators ect.

Then you can plant trees where you want them the server only ever has to account for trees placed by player doesnt effect the other trees on map.

I love this idea! I definitely agree that they need their own type of pot. I would like the pot to be placeable on BA and CV, though, so you could make a park-like area as someone else mentioned. But just having placeable/plantable trees, regardless of where or how they grow, would be really exciting. :D
