Problems with installing updates? Not restricted to Empyrion
Hello,

I have started to encounter problems with installing game updates. The only fix is to completely remove the game and re-start the PC. Then I can download, install and play the game until the next update comes along, then have to remove etc again. Has anyone else started to experience this problem?

The error is: ....mising file privileges. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\temp\383120.

Somehow permissions are being broken to this folder, as I have no access to it, even though I am an administrator.

Regards
Paul

let Steam control the Instalation, steam install missing files

but.. "missing privilegs" .. you dont start as Windows-Admin?m when yes, i think this is the Problem

Your problem stems from putting steam under C:\Program Files(x86).

All of my games are under C:\steam or C:\games for non-steam games and I never get update problems. There is never any need to start anything as admin.

Are you by change using Ad-Aware, or Malware bytes? I have seen both cause issues with steam.

I have also had AVG antivirus, Avast and Panda Antivirus updates cause them to block steam processes and game permissions.

I don't think that he is having a problem from having steam and the games install to the Default location, but I it could be possible.

When I orginally installed Steam, I just used the default settings. If there is a 64bit version of the client, I can uninstall Steam and install the new version, but I am not sure the (x86) folder structure is the problem as I have had Steam for a long time.

I am not doing anything unusual when updating a game, Steam starts the download and normally updates any game (sometimes I have to press Play before the update is installed).

With regards to Administrator, I logon with an account with administrator rights. I was just confirming that the error 'mising file privileges' is correct. Somehow I loose access rights to the temp folder. I am fairly certain the update process is causing the error, which affects other *Steam* games too.

I am using the free version of Malwarebyte so that should not cause a problem as it is only run manually, which I have not done for a while. I do use Webroot, but I can confirm it has not prevented any process from running.

I did recently install the latest version of Win.10 ver. 1709 build 16299.19, which I think coinsided with a Steam update. Maybe this has caused a problem and I should just completey remove Steam and start again? Not worried about loosing saves or redownloading games.

Regards
Paul

you could try reinstalling steam, but this is a comon problem and 80% of the time It's Antivirus or Malware protection related. however, If Steam and windows were atempting to update any of the same files at the same time, it could have caused a glitch in the installation of the update.

I have never had this problem myself, so I'm guessing based on what others have said and how it was fixed for them, hopefully some one who has actually had this problem will coment and tell you how they fixed the problem.

That said, A reinstall can't hurt, but if that doesn't work I would suggest removing your AV and Malware protection (temporarally) and testing the update again.

I have reinstalled Steam again over the top, unfortunately the problem is still there. After restarting Steam there was a problem with the Steam Service too and Steam had to reinstall that. I think I will bite the bullet and remove Steam completely and start again. As a side note, whilst playing Life is Feudal Forest village, somehow most of my dektop icons have been moved to my 2nd screen and I cannot seem to permanently move them back, which is also odd. Maybe I unknowingly pressed a keyboard combination?

Give steam admin in properties, problem fixed

I have removed & installed Steam again from scratch. It was not a problem free install as it appeared to become confused with installing additional Steam updates, but it is running again now. I will report back if the problems re-occurs.

Next issue you get, kill STEAM first, let it restart, and kill it via TASK MANAGER or it will just run in backround and not actually shut down, then Steam will update itself, if steam isnt up to date with its steam sync servers it CANNOT update you game.

This might not be the issue, or it could one of the issues you have without realizing it.

Open up Task Manager. Find a process called igfxEM Module. End this process. Try updating again. Also stop Superfetch while there. Seems to slow the PC down in some cases, usually when accompanied by igfxEM.

Humm, first update attempted by Empyrion has failed again. The error is: ....mising file privileges. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steamapps\temp\383120\Content\Bundles\textures.001. I have checked and cannot see igfxEM running maybe because I have disabled my on-board graphics card and use my Nvidia card instead? I think I will raise a propper support ticket with Empyrion.

I had this problem and I am admin on my pc. Close steam down then try starting steam as admin, right click on your steam shortcut and tell it to run as admin. When steam starts windows will ask if you want to allow this program to make changes. If htis solves it then you can set up the shortcut or steam to always run as admin. Here is a little guide https://www.cnet.com/how-to/always-run-a-program-in-administrator-mode-in-windows-10/.

I had even given steam full permissions and still had the issue, only fix for me was to make sure steam always started as admin.

I have tried the above, but is does not seem to fix the problem. I have uninstalled the game & re-installed again, making sure the .exe was running as admin. Have to wait for the next update to see if the problem is fixed. Thanks.

When steam starts does windows ask you if you want this program to make changes?

I receive the UAC window, if that is what you are refering to yes.
