Newbie with questions about bases and multiplayer
Hi All - just bought the game a couple of days ago and am having a fine time! I am learning as I play plus taking the usual infusion of info from google and you tube.

However I would be grateful if you could help with a couple of things I don't get. There are loads of things I still need to learn of course, but there are 2 current pressing questions that I have:

1) "Starter" base vs base built with your own core

I have seen many comments how the starter base (in my case the Crashed Shuttle on Akua) isn't the same as building a base with your own core. Is there really a downside to just developing the starter as your main base - or was that just the case with previous game versions?

At the moment, in the control panel I can access all the apparent functionality of the starter base (including lots of device additions I've built). I have not replaced the Shuttle core with my own. In the Control Panel I have set ownership from Public to Private and finally to the Faction I created. I can't see any difference, so am wondering what benefit (if any) I would gain by starting afresh with my own base starter block.

I am about to start a multiplayer game with a friend who has just bought the game, so I would really like to get the basics about bases properly understood early on!

The multiplayer element leads to my other question:

2) Player Factions

Our intention is to play fully coop on Akua (and then beyond!). What would work best?

- Set up our own individual factions and create an alliance
- Set up one faction that we are both members of
- Don't bother setting up factions at all (and maybe set everything to public?)

If a player joins another persons faction does everything they have built then belong to the faction? If a player then left the faction, would they lose access to everything thay had built and have to start building from scratch?

My friend will be hosting the game on his PC and there will only ever be 2 of us, so the simplest way of gaming together for a long term game is what we're after.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks Infidel - will try that tonight!

So, just the question over whether developing the starter base is any different better/worse than using your own starter block to build one from scratch. Any current info appreciated - cheers.

No, there really is no difference. They function the same, its just that having a premade base obviously has benefits in that you don't have to build one right away. You can wait until you have the resources to build a better looking base.

There is one differance. When you build your own base the base attack drones will start coming to attack it. I have never seen them attack the starter base.

The base attack drones are good and bad. Good to shoot them down and loot them, especially early in the game. Bad in that the moment you put down the starter block and start a generator, they will come, ready on not.

On the harder planets often the Patrol vessel is triggered to come at the same time and this can be a very serious situation to deal with.

I suggest living in the starter base and prebuild everything you need for your own base complete with turrets and ammo, then when ready, put it down quickly and arm it. Then build away.

Or you can live in the starter base and rebuild it over time. Either way works.

The factions just allow you to share your stuff, base, ships, materials... Of course you can set your own rules for what is off limits. You can keep your own private storage boxes or ships if you desire, but in coop, most things are shared.

Thanks for all the help guys - much appreciated :)

Tonight in our first co-op game I think we'll faction together and stick to our starter base(s) till we're ready to defend ourselves as advised. I do like the idea of having to defend against drones but was concerned I might be missing out on something else by doing just the starter base (as I am doing in my solo game).

Cheers!

There is functionally no difference between the starter base and one you build yourself _other_ than the fact that drones attacks often don't start till the game registers you as having 'built' your own base. This can be as simple as putting down a starter block, generator, and fuel tank.

IIRC faction assignments are 'sticky'. meaning if you change a building or vessel's ownership between pubic/private/faction-owned, the next thing you build inherits what you just set. IIRC.

Access control is handled via faction membership and locks.

  • If something is private, no one other than you can use the "F" key to interact with blocks connected to it -UNLESS- it is locked.
    • Items which aren't locked will just return a "can't access X, not the proper faction" error when someone hits F.
    • Items which are locked with a 'normal' lock code will present a dialog box prompting for the code when someone hits F.
[*}Items which are locked with the code 0000 are considered public access and will allow anyone to access them.
  • If something belongs to a faction, then anyone in the faction can interact with it using the "F" key but people outside the faction are treated as above.
  • If something is set to be public, then anyone can mess with it.

It's also important to note that docking to a base or CV requires that what you are docking to it matches the same ownership, i.e. if you have a private small vessel, you can 'land' on a faction owned CV but your docking gear won't engage to lock you down and the CV will refuse to move without all the ships touching it being 'docked'.

This can actually be helpful in some situations but would definitely limit your ability to adventure with them if you are both planning on having your own ships and also riding along with each other if you aren't in the same faction.

So I'd recommend that you both join the same faction, and assign things that need to be shared to the faction while keeping the things you want to be 'yours' private (i.e. if you want your own 'home' separate from theirs).

Just a hint for joe public that i learned far too late.

Instead of worrying about fuel and charges, Get a hover craft and throw a ♥♥♥♥ tonne of drills on it, makes life so much easier, i will never drill by hand again because its slow and HV's can mine 10 times the amount because of the many drills, servers have a maximum amount of drills you can have on one vehicle.

Yes, a well built hover-miner will clear out a 10,000 ore deposit in less than 10 minutes. Save the largest deposits for each ore for an autominer (because the autominer determines how much ore it'll dig up per hour by the 'quality' of the deposit and that's directly tied to how large the deposit started as) and dig out one or two of the mid-sized ones for each ore and you'll be set for a good long time.

Thank you for the further info on bases and factions - it helps immensely. Will go for the single faction share-all approach with delayed base building (vs starter base) for sure.

Also definitely planning to get a hover miner asap. I did get an HV in my solo game but was put off a bit by the fact it let my factory spawn me an HV that I designed in creative that had components I hadn't actually unlocked in the tech tree yet. In creative it said it was a level 5 vehicle (I am lvl 7) - so I went for it as I had the ingots required for the build. It was only later that I realised I couldn't have built the thing directly in survival mode due to my lack of research. Felt like cheating so I have parked it up ready for use when I finally unlock all the gear!

This is a very good game though - soooo addictive :)

Its sort of a bug/oversight being able to build in the factory what you can't build on your own. I think most people don't consider it cheating. I don't. I suspect that will get fixed at some point.
