Must be on an older save, the switches are only generated in games started in the newest updates. Before 6.0 you had to blow your way in, I think it was 8-9 satchel charges in the last version.
I use my plasma cannons. Fill my ship up with plenty of ammo for it and take those grills & windows down. :)
Umm, I don't trust those switches. I often find hidden spawner rooms with trap doors near the core. I take the subtle "Blow the heck out of everything" approach :D
Something I did in one game was to spawn a tiny HV bunker buster next to the core, blew it up, then dismantled the HV and put it back in the factory. However, most cores are pretty easy to take down on the current version.
I literally fly this through bases, if i need to blow out an armored door, or combat steel blocks, i quickly set up the gun and ammo box and go to town. then just remove the 2 parts, store them and continue on. I thought it would be cumbersome but with practice it's become quite efficient, and i have tons of storage so i never need to run all the way out to dump at the ship.
But it has come in very handy against cores encased in armored blocks. The gatling gun cuts through them in about 100 rounds or so(i've never counted)
