Is there a downside to heavier armors?
Or should I just wear heavy asap?

Heavier armor is just that, heavy. It restricts movement more. You will run slower, have shorter jumps, and consume food more quickly.

In all other aspects, it is better than other armor. Much more protection from attacks, heat, cold, and radiation. Has 4 upgrade module slots. I usually just place 4 multi boosts in them, keeping EVA handy for space walks.

Ahhh, all makes sense minus the food consumption. Always assumed this was powered-armor given the amount of crap we can carry, lol. Food consumption was already bad in Light and Medium... how much worse is it in heavy?

Depends on the modules you're using. Heaviest modules are Armor modules. With 4 of these, you might have 600+ armor but you'll need a constant supply of Zirax lunches to keep active. Oh and you won't be able to run or jetpack hardly at all.

With 4 multi boosts, the change is negligible and you get used to it quickly. I still like to take my armor off while in my base. It's amazing how fast you can run without it, and how slowly you consume food.

How fast do you die though unarmored? LOL. Even light armor lets a minigun drone take its time killing you.

You can do pretty well with no armor if you're careful, I've often run around with broken armor on just to keep the boosts active. They still seem to work with broken armor.

Good condition heavy armor makes a HUGE difference when fighting. With 3 armor boosts, you can take a beating and not be on a med kit drip to stay alive. The big problem with heavy armor for me is the inability to jump. Even one block high you have to time it perfectly. But when clearing a POI, there isn't a whole lot of jumping typically and you can put an armor station on SV's, so just carry different armor and boosts to switch them out when you change tasks.

I assume the boosts stack with themselves?

The more calories one burns, the more the body needs to replenish later on. If you're lifting heavy armor around your body all day and doing multiple physical activities, you're gonna need a lot of food and energy.

Hm, so I am kind of the opposite, being largely the squad pilot. food efficiency is more important for me day to day (as well as insulation for EVA work i suppose) than armour, so should I go back to light or even no? I suppose can't do no as need oxy for EVA... (Right now I wear medium, i like the amount of oxy it carries).

If I am not fighting with guns I wear light armor.

Most of the scenarios I play involve starter planets with 15-20 rads of radiation and wildly fluctuating temperatures, so obviously, I don't leave the base without armor on. :)
