Nitrado are just a web hosting site that like any that rent out there servers.
Eleon Games Studio cannot afford to run a few hundred servers around the world because it means admining them, they are 5 people in a room programming, its just not possible.
So the best solution is to allow a host to rent servers, they took the time to find a company with good infrastructure, that would be Nitrado, and they became the official developer preffered hosts.
That does not limit you from using any other ISP host in the world, you are free to choose one from your own country if you choose to host a dedicated server.
All Empyrion servers out there are free to use, there are a couple with real world money perks built in but you can still play free there if you like, there are servers that advertise they will always be 100% free like Vanatus aus, so they will cost you nothing for ever and there server is a good spec.
You also have the option of not using any server, but creating your own, on an old PC at home that has a bit of RAM and a CPU over 2.5 ghtz and your in business.
If the game went down the EVE road, which is what your really asking Jannes, we would not have dedicated servers for home, or the 300 other servers that pop up on the list rented by people like you and me through there ISP, , we would have half a dozen per large continent sort of thing, they might be better, they might be worse its hard to judge that, but there would be less freedom in the game.
The best thing you guy can do as student at school still, is use that brain of yours and learn to build a PC, its really not hard, especially if you start with AMD, much easier CPU fitting for beginners, and simply build a super cheap server, most house holds have a dead PC or two now day, salvage some parts, match there era of tech, slots etc, and slap one together just for a server, later in life, you will appreciate that you took the time to learn to build PCs, when its saves you thousands and thousands of dollars.
