Dive into different lakes, deep enough. Seems to get seldom when your level rises. Some flat lakes have non.

Do I just grab it or use the drill?

You can just grab it with f once you get close enough.

It seems to grow in 'groves' underwater. Some areas will have none, but you'll often find it in clusters with like 10 growth all within visible range from eachother.

It seems to require a certain depth. If you have a lake with a large reasonably flat lakebed at that depth you get loads of the stuff. Too shallow and you get none even if it's a large lake.

I had this problem as well. Find a reasonably large lake and go to the center and walk along the bottom. You will find a ton there if it's large enough/deep enough. When i say deep it's not *that* deep but some lakes are very shallow and have none. Bring a drill to nab some of the ore resources that are down there, too.

I noticed that on Omicron you can tell if you're at the right depth because the ground will basically be covered in non-interactable seaweed, which unfortunately makes the actual seaweed that much harder to spot. You have to basically look for the breaks in the pattern, or get so low that you can see it poking out the top. Nightvision helps, obviously, and it's otherwise next to impossible to find at night.
