LAN with crossover cable?
Is it possible to make direct connect, anybody knows?

Thanks in advance.

I have not heard of anyone using a crossover cable in years. These days everyone has routers in their houses so there is generally no use for them - not like the good old days when you connected a modem directly to your computer.

Why, may I ask, are you using one? Why can you not simply connect both machines to your LAN - surly if you have any kind of router (for internet access, for example), you could do this?

As an owner of such a cable, i use it becouse it's the simplest possible solution to connect two PC's, removing the "middleman" router from the eqaution. 2 PC's, 1 cable and that's it. After all, why would you want to fuss with router settings & portforwarding issues when it could be as easy as just plugging that cable in to both PC's?

As for OP's question, no, i don't think direct LAN gameplay is any longer supported; there was this function, but it got truncated afaik. Now, the only officially supported method for LAN's is to make a dedicated server (or rent one) and connect to it.

Fair enough. For reference though, you do not need to port forward if you are both playing on the same LAN. Port forwarding effects inbound/outbound connections to and from the internet.

How do you connect to the internet on these two lonesome PC's, out of curiosity?

I don't :)

I use such a setup only in the case i need to connect 2 PC's for playing a LAN game or transferring lots of data quickly between them without having to use an external disk. For using the internet, i use the normal setup with a router.

OK, but ... why? If you have a router then you already have a LAN. All you need to do is connect the two PC's to it and your LAN games and file transfers will work just the same. You don't need to mess about with Router settings, or anything else infact - it will simply work. Windows does a fine job of managing PC's connected to a LAN, as does your router for the routing of traffic. It sounds like you are making things more complicated for yourself when there is no need to.

Gigabit, i do not have a gigabit router, and wireless is glacialy slow.
connect crossover cable and enjoy the transfer speeds.

Gotcha! That makes sense - I was just trying to figure out why someone would be using a crossover cable in this day and age. As far as playing LAN games is concerned - Gigabit is severe overkill though (understandable for file transfers).

Might be worth looking into getting a Gigabit router - that would make life so much easier for you. They can be got pretty cheap these days as well.

lol :happymeat:
Where I work, we have plenty of spare time. What we dont have is internet access.

The power transmission substation I work on, is located in the countryside, rural region. The corporative internet access is all blocked by websense and stuff.

Also, due to the distance from the city limits, the cellphone coverage barely reaches 3G.

So, we re limited to pre-historical net gaming, like Local LAN via router or crossover, if we intend to play together both with our notebooks.

:happy_creep: I am with you. Blimey though, that reminds me of the days I used to play the first Diablo over two 486's with a serial cable. God those things were slow.

...getting back on topic, I do not really know if it works with crossover cables, but here is a guide on the dedicated server setup that could help you (worth a try):

I don't use such a setup on a daily basis. I only use it in certain situations, like this one for example:

i go to visit a friend over the weekend and since i'm not sure if he has internet, what kind of internet he uses (cable, optic, wireless), what kind of router he uses (maybe he uses a prepaid simcard to access wireless internet with his cellphone?), i'll take the crosssover cable just in case.

So when we're in the same place and if we decide to transfer some larger files or play a LAN game, we don't have to worry about him having internet access, his router, his internet provider limitations, his local settings (even if windows autoconfigures them) or indeed anything but finding the hole in our PC's where the cable plugs in. To me at least that sounds like the least complicated way to connect two PC's.

Ofcourse, if everything also works by plugging the cable to his router, then no problem; but if something doesn't work when we do it that way, it's always good to have a backup crossover cable handy ;)

The problem is when we start the game there. Steam is offline and a window in the title screen prompts "STEAM IS OFFLINE, THEREFEORE, MULTIPLAYER IS DISABLED"

What I really need now is some way the game to alow me play multiplayer with Steam offline.

We tried hard, but Steam isnt validating with the poor mobile internet connection.

Why was Lan support removed? This is a deal breaker if true. I bought 3 copies of Empyrion to play with my son and grandson on my home network. I do Not want to connect to a server or set one up either. I have No interest in playing this game over the internet, none.

So what's next no more SP support either?

Yeah, sorry, no idea if that is even doable then. Perhaps the devs (or anyone else) could jump in with an answer there then.

I do know there was a way of connecting to single player IP's via simply direct-connecting to the IP of the person, but it was buggy and unsupported with quite a few limitations so I would not recommend it. Still, if you have no other option then it may be better than nothing.

LAN support still exists - these guys are talking mainly about playing co-op without an internet connection by the looks of things.

NO Internetconnection no Multiplayer available so crossover don't work at all. expect you have another source of internet for both involved computers

and peer to peer gameplay may works but this is completly unsupported and might bugged like hell
