Did you know that at some point in the game you get two Espers, one which gives you +2 to Strength and one which gives you +2 to Magic when you level up?
If you were doing all your training NOT on the Veldt, you were probably gaining exp, levelling up and not necessarily making the most of those stat bonuses.
On the Veldt however you gain no experience points, but you still get AP, so you can learn all the spells without wasting level ups without getting stat bonuses.
Apologies if you already knew that, but I thought I might as well try and help you make the best of the situation xD.
I've gotten Joker Doom three times in two play sessions while auto-battling. I don't think I EVER got Joker Doom in playthroughs of older versions. Maybe once, maybe.
So maybe Slots just isn't any good for auto-battling.
You don't keep your level up bonuses from your equipped magicite though which renders the feature useless once you have magicite, unless they changed it in this version.
To be fair that's another thing that's been in the game since it's original release. In fact if you talk to the townsfolk in that area they even mention monsters being able to do that and go so far as to say that perhaps you should equip relics to counter it.
Overall the WoR in general is a bit of a difficulty spike until you start getting characters back. Even then many FF games in their second half tend to have that one enemy, boss or random encounter than can royally screw you over if you're not careful.
Save often. That's generally the best advice you can give anyone playing an old school RPG such as FF or Dragon Quest.
As for leveling in Final Fantasy 6, if you care about your stats, you'll gain as few levels as you possibly can till you get the better espers.
