Holy ridiculous!!!!
So I just completed the Magitek Facility and was in the process of teaching all my characters the new spells available to me. I taught Edgar, Locke, Sabin and Terra all of them (which took hours). I then change my party to Cyan, Gau, Setzer and Terra do a few battles, put auto battle on with setzer using his slot ability. Frickin Jokers Death wipes my party and I lost all the leveling I'd just done. OMG, super frustrating. I realize I should have saved but I was fighting mobs with no chance of killing me, so I felt safe. Unheard of that my own character can kill my entire party without being influenced by an enemy. Now that I'm done ranting, my question is, how often will this take place? I might never use him again because of this. Love the game but that is just stupid.

Setzer has always had that ability. That being said, I don;t think I ever experienced it. So sounds like bad luck. And I played ff6 A LOT back in the day.

It may or may not be a blessing in disguise.

Did you know that at some point in the game you get two Espers, one which gives you +2 to Strength and one which gives you +2 to Magic when you level up?

If you were doing all your training NOT on the Veldt, you were probably gaining exp, levelling up and not necessarily making the most of those stat bonuses.

On the Veldt however you gain no experience points, but you still get AP, so you can learn all the spells without wasting level ups without getting stat bonuses.

Apologies if you already knew that, but I thought I might as well try and help you make the best of the situation xD.

Woops, I made a slight mistake there, it's Strength and Magic not Attack and Defense. *Edits*

If you die you return to your last save and keep all the experience you earned before the death. You do lose ABP gains though.

I've been playing Final Fantasy 6 since the SNES days, and Setzer was always one of my favorites. I recently bought this version and, naturally, included Setzer in my party.

I've gotten Joker Doom three times in two play sessions while auto-battling. I don't think I EVER got Joker Doom in playthroughs of older versions. Maybe once, maybe.

So maybe Slots just isn't any good for auto-battling.

Just experienced another idiotic possibility. As Celes, right after you begin the WoR, I headed to Tzen to find my old gang. I find Sabin holding up a house and he tells me a child is stuck inside and he cant hold the house up forever (go figure). Inside im fighting monsters, in a house (dumb). A mob that looks like a rock snail uses an ability to petrify me. Why would you even allow that when I'm by myself? I had plenty of health and he uses it as he is dying, meaning I had won the battle. Yet I die and have to restart from my last save. Just stupid. I'm having a hard time forgiving all of these nonsensical mechanics. I only lost like 30 mins this time but when its for something I couldn't have seen coming I become frustrated. Geeze I complain a lot. Please belittle me so I stop being such a little kid about it.

In school, you are taught to save your work regularily when doing stuff on the computer, the same applies for video games.

That is a one in a million shaft you got from the good old makers of FF6. :D Sorry dude. You gotta watch Setzer, he's a wild card.

It isn't only Joker's Doom that does it. He can call a random esper and one of them does an attack that kills everyone. The same is true when using the "magicite" consumable item that summons a random esper.

You don't keep your level up bonuses from your equipped magicite though which renders the feature useless once you have magicite, unless they changed it in this version.

To be fair that's another thing that's been in the game since it's original release. In fact if you talk to the townsfolk in that area they even mention monsters being able to do that and go so far as to say that perhaps you should equip relics to counter it.

Overall the WoR in general is a bit of a difficulty spike until you start getting characters back. Even then many FF games in their second half tend to have that one enemy, boss or random encounter than can royally screw you over if you're not careful.

Save often. That's generally the best advice you can give anyone playing an old school RPG such as FF or Dragon Quest.

They give you the means to block petrification. I don' think games should have to baby everyone around for everything, frankly. Yeah it sucks, but that isn't exactly a long segment in the game. I don't remember if any NPCs warn you. In some of the games they do. FFX has a few enemies that can petrify the entire *party* too, and I lost lots of time to that...

Back in the NES day, you'd almost expect 9 hordes of some type of death mob, like zombies/ghouls? that cast paralysis on your entire party in one turn and then attack you until you are dead and you are completely helpless.

As for leveling in Final Fantasy 6, if you care about your stats, you'll gain as few levels as you possibly can till you get the better espers.
