You need to push him really hard until he gets serious. Along the story in FFV, he's also holding back while being Exdeath's cohort, in a way that it almost seems like he wants Bartz to keep advancing.

well he's a superboss in XIII-2 too but still act like a joke.
Type-0 is the only game that he's not a joke.
Also in 8 he wasn't that funny. Maybe the humor came from what happened to Odin and Seifer.
And in XII where he's one of the tougher hunts in the game, but again humorous.
Right? FFXIV's depiction game straight to mind.

I thought they were just design flourishes, like spikes. It wasn't until someone pointed it out to me that I noticed the arms drawn on there.
He sounds kind of odd in XI with his pirate speech though.
Fun fact: His voice actor in 12 is John Di Maggio who also voiced Wakka & Bender.
