He hides his power level quite well.

You need to push him really hard until he gets serious. Along the story in FFV, he's also holding back while being Exdeath's cohort, in a way that it almost seems like he wants Bartz to keep advancing.

Now you're going to notice his quirkiness when you see his cameos again in the other games.

Gilgamesh has only not been a joke in Final Fantasy 9. He was the same joke in 12, 13-2 and 14. But he really is a powerful swordsman. Whimsical but very powerful.

He's a lot like Deadpool; a comical goof on the outside, but also one of the deadliest guys around.

EDIT: Okay, but seriously, timing.

He is a joke character in almost every game, except for Type-0 where he's a hardcore superboss.

well he's a superboss in XIII-2 too but still act like a joke.

Type-0 is the only game that he's not a joke.

Alleyway Jack was pretty chill.

Also in 8 he wasn't that funny. Maybe the humor came from what happened to Odin and Seifer.

And in XII where he's one of the tougher hunts in the game, but again humorous.

He's hilarious in FF14.

Right? FFXIV's depiction game straight to mind.

The best parts of his design in VIII are the cardboard arms he's wearing on one side.

Awesome character.

Wow, I genuinely never noticed they were cardboard, I had just assumed they were real.

Way to go, you just justified my 30th playthrough of VIII lol.

Four real arms on one side, three crude fakes and one real on the other. Gotta love fun little details like that.

I thought they were just design flourishes, like spikes. It wasn't until someone pointed it out to me that I noticed the arms drawn on there.

Gilgamesh is truly a hero.

Gilgamesh is the comic relief kind of character really, but he is pretty powerful when you fight him in various FF games. His reference to the power rangers in 5 makes me laugh.

He sounds kind of odd in XI with his pirate speech though.
Fun fact: His voice actor in 12 is John Di Maggio who also voiced Wakka & Bender.
