Can't dive the submarine after bringing it to the surface

I'm stuck. The first thing I did when I got the submarine in world 2 is docking it at the tiny lake next to the town of Moore. After I did some shopping in town and some monster farming, I got back in the sub. The thing moves but won't dive somehow. Now i'm stuck in the game because the only place I can go to in that area is a forest that is blocked. Is there a special way to make the submarine dive or what??
