You could always walk back. It's actually suggested you wait until you get Fira before taking on Shiva.

yes and I missed that if you back to karnak the mage store is open with cura and blizzara.

you can just buy some ice rods from the store, have black mage(s) equip them and throw the rod at the boss, it will cause Blizzaga spell that can kill the boss in 3-4 turns. just remember don't attack when it's in a tornado form.

Actually, the Tornado Form is, arguably, the best one to kill. Your drop from the boss is based on which form you take him out in. His humanoid form drops a Flame Scroll, buyable once you reach Lix for 200 gil a piece, the hand drops a Flame Rod, which you can already buy, but the tornado form drops a Flame Bow, which is really good since you won't have access to most elemental weapons for some time.

I just did that boss, been years since I played this and I wasn't thinking ahead at all and went in with 3 berserkers and a white mage. Made for an interesting fight, just constant counter attacks and form shifting ^_^
boss was super easy with some blizzara and shiva.

Use heal + almost every turn, use ice + (~ 1200 dmg).
Physic isn't really effective against him unless you have a berzerk with monk damage (which I gave to Bartz).
yeah problem was that I lacked Cura and blizara and shiva.

I didnt know the mage shop would open after you escpaed the prison. My fault.
With those spells it made the boss fight 10x easier.

I actually killed it entirely by accident. I went in planning to just explore and gain XP/Gil, but ended up killing it after a drawn-out battle of very carefully plotted out advances (and some 500+ damage Blizzara spells from Red Mage Faris). It was a lot of fun going in slightly underprepared, actually.

I didn't have Shiva during this fight but since there is tons of things to buy after you escape prison, I've farmed a lot of gils (which included some levels eventually) and it helped a lot. Shiva was quite a piece of cake after.

If you can have her during the fight, it will surely deals a lot of damage.

Remember, this game will punish you if you skip fights and run away from random battles. It's an SNES era JRPG; Some grinding is expected and REQUIRED. Sure, you can push forward with minimal grinding, but eventually you'll find yourself grinding if just to buy new gear. Thankfully, I was able to get to the main castle for the second part of the game, which is a GREAT AP grinding spot (if you have Level 5 Death), and now I'm sitting on over 900,000 gil.

EDIT: I know that has nothing to do with what you're doing, but I just thought I'd remind you of the age of this game and what it expects of you. If ever you have trouble, the key rule to these games is this; Level up, upgrade gear if you can, and try again. Try and try until you win.

I found it pretty easy without black mage summoner or cura. I just used a white mage with healing staff and I had to use 2downs but no real threat. Healing staff is really damn strong early game

For anyone who needs it since I recently had a real tough time with this one.

Whenever you attack when it’s in the hand form it always counters with fira. This would always down one of my party members and I just couldn’t keep the battle going. The strategy to keep this from happening is to let the boss use fira on itself when in the tornado form. As long as you don’t attack during this it will keep doing this until it is out of mp. Now you can go on a full offensive since it can no longer counter with fira on you and boom! Easy peasy!

Can confirm, that's what i ended up doing too. Hit it a couple times until it turns into the form where it uses fira on itself. Then just do nothing. wait and it will waste all its mp casting fira on itself. Then you go nuts
