The fan translation wasn't released until October of 1998. There was no English release of FFV prior to that. The first official English release was the following September on Playstation. You're probably just misremembering due to how young you were at the time.

This. In-game, PS1, didn't have a name. In the instruction manual, it was Bartz.

Actually, while you could name him whatever, in the PS1 version, it defaulted to Butz. (Even though yes, the manual shows it as Bartz in the screenshots)

This is basically the same with Tales of Destiny and "Stahn". (On the back of the case, it has his name as Stan which is his name in Japan, but in the manual and the game, it's Stahn and in cameos for later games, it's still Stahn.)

I don't see anything wrong with Butz. There's a character called Buzz Lightyear, a footballer named Nicky Butt, and Neville Longbottom in Harry Potter.

Only five year old kids are gonna laugh at something like this.

Isn't it probably something like "Boots" in pronunciation anyway? Beautz wouldn't work. I'm trying to think of some spelling that preserves it. Oh well at least it isn't the era of sugar rushes in cafés rather than drunk people in pubs in localized games anymore...

Bartz is the pet name for Bartolomäus, the German form of Bartholomew. Bartholomew is a Hebrew name that means "son of Talmay". Talmay is a Hebrew name meaning "he of many furrows", or one who owns large tracts of land.

Klauser is a German family name derived from the medieval given name Klaus, short for Niklaus or Nicholaus, which means "people's victory".

Bartz's name was originally envisioned to be romanized as "Butz," romanized this way as early as the 1992 Japanese official strategy guide, and since then more prominently in Final Fantasy Art Museum and Japanese versions of Dissidia titles. Official localizations of Final Fantasy V have never romanized the name this way, instead changing it to "Bartz," likely because Butz is a homophone of "butts." In the English version of Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals he is referred to as "Batz," another transliteration of his Japanese name.

Butz is an existing German surname that emerged in medieval times as one of the notable families in Austria.

In short, it's actually supposed to be Bartz.That's what they decided they wanted it to be once they officially localized it. Therefore it's not a mistranslation to use Bartz.

It's Battsu, which could be Butz, Buts, Bartz, Barts, or some other things probably. But Bartz makes sense as Seraphna explains, considering his last name is Klauser. Guts from Berserk has almost the same name, Gattsu, but he's not Gartz, Gutz, Garth, or anything else, he's Guts. Japanese doesn't fully compare with other languages, it has to do the best it can with what it has.
