Paid open beta?
Can someone help me understand why i need to pay the devs to do their job? The way i always understood it is open betas are free because the devs are getting free outsourced bug testing for their game. Why should i have to pay $10 for a beta release? If you want to still develop the game but also give it a "soft release" make it an early access title.

You don't have to pay. You won't be able to play Hot Lava, but you won't have to pay. Nobody is forcing you to buy this game, so piss off already if you're unhappy about it and can't read the multiple forum posts addressing the issue

There is a reason why they called it an open beta, hopefully this statement from the devs clears it up a little bit https://steamcommunity.com/games/382560/announcements/detail/3425432499008078547

Literally found this game through the recomended tab....theres no difference in the way they put it on here. Its still being marketed through steams algorithims and curators as far as i can see...
Should have played that Alpha test version which was free to influencers, back when it still seemed related to the dinosaurs TV show oddly enough..The game has far more to it than it did then, way more than 10 dollars worth of work.. You get 2 copies.. sell one or trade it and basically get them game free... Or don't pay and play at all and wait.

My point is, that its allready a full release and they are just branding it as an "open beta" to seemingly get free testing for their game but also make a buck on it....but thats not how open betas work....i have no intention of buying it. Just calling the devs out for being shady about the whole thing.

I loved Don't Starve, but this practice is staining their otherwise good rep. For me at least.
You're entitled to feel that way... I thought the game felt pretty close to finished a year ago and it pretty much is.. There's a lot of bugs and collision issues because many of the levels have so many areas you can get stuck in.. Reagrdless the labeling I'm glad they intend to fix it and am happy, can always use more and more content though. I mean if these lvels were as simple as any mirrors edge level it would have been done long ago I'm sure.. Also I always have to keep in mind they have 2, nearly 3 ongoing EA access games and continued updates with since released games.. For the tiny company they are going beyond my expectation within short time frames.

@Spear The Donut: Your opinion is completely based on false premises. "Free" and "Open" are different words with different meanings. EOD

Been a gamer for 25+ years and have participated in many open and closed betas. NEVER have i seen an "open" beta that costs $5 to participate in because the whole idea of an open beta is that you are helping to bug test the game i.e. the devs are getting your help for FREE. In that regard there is definitely a correllation between the two words, thought they are clearly different words with different spelling and meanings and everything. kudos for recognizing that by the way, but ultimately you're right. Me being upset over it is basically my opinion, therefore i took to the forums to voice said opinion. I dont expect them to change anything, and i really doubt this thread will matter at all. ever. but for me it was nice to get that grievance out in the public. so, thanks for your input i guess.

Also, its not the "open" part with a price tag attached that concerns me, its the "beta" part. The difference between and open and closed beta has nothing to do with money, The difference between the two is that one is OPEN to the public and the other is CLOSED to the public and is invite only or first come first serve. My problem is that traditionally, at least in every single beta (open or closed) ive ever taken part in, the beta was free because technically im performing a free service to the developers. Why should i have to pay someone to bug test their game for them? Thats all i want to know. Why would they even label it as a "beta" in any form if they are charging for it? Its a troubling practice in my eyes, especially in a day and age when i see gamers taken advantage of (WILLINGLY in most cases...) by developers big and small constantly.
Its used IN THIS INSTANCE as nothing is all the same, to avoid the endless leagues of people saying the game isnt finished yet if it was reloeased EA, which every EA games gets critisized for because people are so ignorant..Those same people think Fortnite has been released, It hasnt and won't be for awhile..If you notice there's a reason why they won't allow people to make reviews to sully the product before it's finished. And NO up until recently there was always a paywall or a lottery to get in an open or closed beta. Black Ops 4 for instance has an open beta... But you need to preorder the game to get it. If you support this company and play their other games instead of simply just knowing about them, that would explain lack of trust etc. Becase this company has never ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over any backers. And has and will continue to deliver their promises. Most other companies NEED the people for Open Beta because they're not as loved as Klei.. The fact opf the matter is people will pay to play this in this state and recieve a free copy. Letting non super fans gets casual critisism and hate that doesn;t help the product just bury the game in Valves store.
Also this practice hasn't stopped more than handful of people from buying.. but THEY ALL COME to discussions to complain.. There's plenty of people playing this game and giving all features of the community aspect so far feel very rewarding and worth buying.. Nothing worse than a game in any state being dead when it requires direct competition and leaderboards.. When you frun through a level and see 100 other people run past you.. Thats a lot of a game Klei doesn;t advertise through any of their other games or facets.
The ♥♥♥♥♥♥ indie devs trying to rip the game off and charge double the price with 1/4 the content and abysmal level design and graphics should be shamed if anything.. This game will probably shoot up to at least 25 dollars because 10 bucks would be the early price and 10 is way to little for the amount of work gone in to this game even in "beta" phase, which btw is most billion dollars companys phase of game completion 1 year after release and this isnt even released yet.

Don't buy it or wait man but I gurentee you, you are in the minority in this... Why not go fight an actual fight like losing down cancerous game stops and ending pre ordering? as well as inflated game editions that charge an extra 60 bucks for garbage.
