Mill: getting housing points
Hello-
This post is about getting housing points for a mill.
According to the tooltip on a mill, you should be able to get a couple housing points off of it, in your kitchen, but it has to be powered (mechanical).

So I bought a mill, put it in my kitchen, and a windmill mounted above my kitchen.

So, voila, my housing bonus went down.

The reason why is now my outdoor statues and such no longer give me points, because I put an industrial item outside!

So, what do I do about this? I started the process of building a small industrial park on the other side of the road, a separate land claim. ...... But what exactly am I doing?

I could build a kitchen for my mill over there, with a windmill, but now my household will be part of my industrial park. Not sure if that's a good idea.

Obviously I'm confused, and could use some help. Thanks.

You will likely be able to leave the mill exactly where it is, in your current kitchen, and still get power to it from across the street. Power linkage (mechanical, as here, and the later electrical) doesn't seem to care about deeds or even ownership, and has a very long range. The range in older versions was only around 12, the same as the default storage range, but now it seems to be at least double that, and it might be as high as 40 or 50.

Depending on the social conditions on the server you are playing on, you may also be able to place the windmill just off your deed (put a pillar right at the edge of your claim, and then attach the windmill to the outside edge of that pillar, so the box portion of the windmill is over unclaimed land). Since it would be unowned, there is some risk that another player could wander by and steal it, but as long as the only way to get to it is through your claim, and it is high enough that it is out of easy hammer reach from the surface, you might get away with it.
Ah, I didn't realize how far the range of a windmill was, thanks. This road is kind of wide, but I should be able to get the windmill close enough. The land usage on this server is getting kind of crowded - the land just west of my kitchen was claimed by another player! My "other" friend. Thanks again.

Also worth noting, any object that consumes / produces power will also extend the range of the power network , even if the object is nonfunctioning. People often put things like mills or waterwheels under roads to act as a range extender. So if your power doesn't quite reach somewhere, you can usually rearrange to have at least 1 energy consumer be closer to the energy producer, and then everything else in your workshop will get connected.
