If it makes it easier to visualize think of a rank system where bronze 5 is the lowest and diamond 1 is the highest.
If the killer you main and do the best on is say diamond 1 rank all your other killers will be clamped in a bracket around that rank meaning even your very worst killer or a killer you had never played before would go against say plat 5 players.
The reason behind this is the game figures if your main killer is that high then while you might lack the mechanical knowledge or ability of the killer your game ability/knowledge with things like mind games, loops etc is high enough where you should not be going against absolute new players.
Also tried survivor and its the same, I guess they are giving up on the SBMM?
unless they have changed backend stuff the MMR system is the same the only thing I can think is I know they adjust the MMR you go against to speed up the q time so if your playing the role that is not getting the buff there is a chance you might go against wildly higher or lower skilled players
