In 2016, each single attack does more damage than in Eternal (barring a few special enemy types, Dread Knight *cough* Blood Maykr), but there are less enemies and they are slower and attack less frequently. To put it in context: A Baron of Hell can deal over 175 damage with a single leap attack, but you see it coming from a mile away, and you will only have one Imp, a Mancubus or an other Baron while dealing with the actual Baron. In Eternal, the Baron deals below 100, but you will have: a Doom Hunter, 3 Mancubi, 3 Imps, 2 Gargoyles, 2 Shield Guys, 2 Whiplashes, 2 Revenants, a Hell Knight and an Arachnotron along the Baron. A single attack deals less damage, but there are more enemies and each and every enemy can attack more frequently as well.
Learn to avoid attacks instinctually, without thinking in general, since it is less chaotic than in Eternal, but before getting health upgrades Doom 2016 is basically a 2-shot fest, which can tun into an 1-shot fest in later levels. And one more thing: Platforming KILLS. No -30 or -50 HP, one fall or hazardous environmental interaction (e.g. conveyor in Resource Operations, coolant in Argent Facility, Argent beam in Argent Tower) and you are dead. It is the same philosophy as the combat: easier, much more simple platforming sections, but with much more severe punishment upon failure.
You can't compare 2016 to eternal, it's 2 very different games that have nearly nothing in common but the name DOOM in em. What are you gonna do next, cry on doom 3 forums that the game is too dark and needs a dash ability?
Played through Doom 2016 on max diff you can at start and it angered me but I had enough fun and beat it. Still not sure if i like it as much as Brutal Doom though. On Doom Eternal that is a really different game. I got like 20-60 minutes in and it feels completely different. Barely a sequel. Not played enough to form a real opinion but I liked Doom 2016 starting out more.
Doom eternal feels like a spin-off, doesn't it
