Btw. a secret plasma gun can be found on level two so if you don't use the upgrade bot right away you can backtracks and develop the stun shot for your plasma rifle BEFORE encountering any shielded enemies.
Also on level 2 the chainsaw is a perfectly viable strategy against them because killing a shielded guy only costs one fuel and you won't meet bigger enemies until the next map so chainsaw away! Level 2 also has a lot of fuel so finding more won't be a problem.
On top of this they do far more damage than any other enemy in the game. Like, kill me in 3-4 seconds from full health full shields.
I gave up on the first big guy fight because a shield guy just appears and rapes me while I try and dodge the big dude. It's BS. After 3-4 deaths I gave up. I'm just not sure how someone thought these guys were a good idea.
Anyway the level design is great and I never had any problem in using the automap.
Hmm, trying to visualize where you are runnign into these guys...
Best bet is grenades I think for your situation. If you can get it just behind them, they should all splatter.
You do get an upgrade once you get to argent tower that gives you a large double jump (please don't "omg, spoilers!" my ass, you pretty much asked where it was.)
Also found that the chainsaw always, always works well. Costs 1 fuel and you cut through it no problem, get a ton of ammo and then move on to the next guy and with how often you get chainsaw ammo it's pretty easy to deal with them.
The explosive shotgun when upgraded also works well when you put it slightly to the left or right of them and hit the with the splash. On top of that you do get frag grenades in the very first mission so really it's not that hard to just put it slightly.
Never had this much toruble with the shield guys, i always just kept moving and hoenstly if one got in the way for more than a few seconds i just would whip the great communicator out and ruin them. Seriously, if your having trouble with the shield guys i don't honestly know how you are going to get through the rest of the game.
Also, I don't know what you guys are talking about, exploding shotgun thing doesn't do much to them in the first round. even if hitting behind them, it doesn't even stagger them so I can glory kill. I guess it's just chainsaw for them, which means I can't use it on anything else in case they show up.
Naw, not going to complain about spoilers. The story is yawnworthy at this point, the game is really about the gameplay. And really, besides the utter bs that shield guys are, and the bad level design/terrible map making navigation the biggest pain in the ass ever, the rest is fairly fun I suppose. Nothing amazing, but fun.
Oh, and the UI could use some tweaks, but it's definitely far from unusable. Like, one thing I don't know, is there are little red notches, or bars under my ammo. What are those?

Equipment Grenades bounce off walls, ceilings and objects before exploding in a set period of time. So you could use your enviroment to lob a grenade such that it bouces off something and lands directly behind them before they explode.
Weapon grenades need a little more finese. Shotgun grenade can be done as long as you use your environment to your advantage and not just fire it at their shield. Plasma grenades stuns them which makes them easy to kill after that.
There is also an artifact that can power up your grenades/holograms which makes them more useful.
....
the other way is to just move more. Use your environment and make those demons work to kill you instead of standing your ground and killing them as they come to you. You'll find yourself surviving the harder battles with the tougher foes more easily if you do.
