Shotgun "20 direct hits on imps"

Well, I cannot figure out what this means. It SOUNDS straight-forward but I must be missing something.

I am shooting imps at pointblank range, destroying them in 1 single hit. The count of dead imps is increasing, but I am not making any progress on the shotgun's mastery skill.

What am I missing?

You literally need the explosive round of the shotgun to hit an imp dead on. Not around him. Best way to do this is stagger an imp then shotgun explosive him. As for the mastery I'm lost. It should unlock after the 20 direct hits

You have to use the alt fire more and land the explosive shot directly on the imp. Not the regular (left click) shot.

I understand the OP. I hold the alt fire (Mouse5 on my setup), get next to an Imp and aim torso dead center, blast it to hell by clicking Left Mouse Button (still holding alt-fire/Mouse5), but the mastery count doesn't increase. Not one single count after about fifty experimental up-close shotgunnings (over various restarts).

I also ask: what am I missing? I will add: what am I doing wrong?

Then my question becomes: How do I use the alt-fire shot? I must not have figured that out yet, which would explain the trouble. I thought I was using it, since I had the targeting cursor change to the alt-fire visual while pressing the alt-fire button, but the trigger to fire the alt must be a key I don't know about.

What are the keys used (assuming default mouse and keyboard settings) and how do I use them? Explain as if I were a child, please.

Make sure you have the correct shotgun add-on equipped (R is the default key for switching), then simply hold mouse 2 and fire as you otherwise would.

The combat shotty has two upgrades which cannot be confused. One of them consists in rapidly firing three shots with a single pull of the trigger, intending to deal massive damage as quickly as possible to bigger foes. The OTHER one (the one you need) is an explosive shot (basically a grenade; if you shoot it over long distances you will see it falling towards the ground, in an arc). In order to acces these alternative modes you need to upgrade the shotty with the explosive ammo, I suppose you know how weapons are upgraded in this game and use THAT to take out the imps.

I’m not sure what’s more aggravating: Not being able to unlock the shotgun mastery when you’re obviously doing it right, or reading all these replies stating the obvious like you’re retarded.

It’s ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bugged. I randomly got one the other day and I did nothing different. Decided to check online and it’s just people being like “You uhhh equip the right upgrade and uhhh you hold right mouse, and then you uhhh hit them directly.” Yeah, no ♥♥♥♥ I tried that like 100 times it doesn’t work.

Also, every time I go to my hud it says I have new data log entries for environments I got weeks ago. My ocd demands I clear them and it aggravates the ♥♥♥♥ out of me. Wanna get the new Doom but not if it’s buggy like this.

When you have it equipped it charges up and a grenade comes out. When nothing is equipped that doesn’t happen. I legit shoot em close up direct hit— nothing. I move like twenty feet away and lob the grenade directly into the center of their body— nothing. I do it again trying to direct hit their face— nothing. I direct hit one who’s in a whole group killing then all— nothing. It’s legit bugged.

Edit: Nope. We’re idiots and killing the wrong mob. I squinted and used all my brain power to figure it out.
