DOOM
Ultra-Nightmare Game Save?
So the rule for ultra nightmare is if you die, you go back to the beginning. Does that render save games inert? Will dying after saving destroy my savegame? Does anyone know?

From the description of the difficulty mode it says you get one life only, to me that means it will delete your progress when you die.

Yep. You can save so that you can pick up where you left off, that's all it's for really.

Like a roguelike, if you die you start over.

yeah, Im kinda pissy right now. I made it half way through the second level, save, exit, come back the next day and its gone. I've seen 1 or 2 others having save issues on ultra-nightmare so dont count on it saving peroid.

Oh that really sucks then.

But hey, completing it one one sitting makes it even more hardcore, right??? :P

Thats exactly how its supposed to work. You don't get saves in Ultra Nightmare. You beat it in one sitting or not at all.

If you want the exact same difficulty with the ability to save then play Nightmare.

EDIT: You can apparently save at the END of a mission. Save and quit. If you quit at any other point you lose your progress and you start over. Sorry for the misinformation.

So it's INTENDED thaot you play in through in one sitting? Crazy
On ultra nightmare the game only saves after a completion of a level. So if you start a level then make it all the way to the last point but leave to go do something you have to start back at the start of the level. And yea dying resets everything back to mission 1.

And no you don't have to do the entire story in one sitting only have to do an entire level in one sitting.

You just need to finish a level every time you play. If you want to quit the game, then finish a mission, select Save and Exit, then quit your game.
If you do otherwise, the game will take you back to the first mission.
Suppose you just finished mission 1, and then saved and exited. If you continue your game from mission 2, but then quit the game half way through, the game will take you to mission 1 again.

Pro Tip: If you're into cheating, restarting your PC does not kill your save. So if you're 1 hit away from dying and get scared just hit ESC to pause the game then restart your PC. You will continue from the last checkpoint (not even from begging of the level). This is also very useful for the two secret jumps (Argent Tower Destroyed) and the classic level lever after the first mech mancubus.

Also once you get the last rune "Survive a death blow with slow mo and 5hp" you can pretty much use the reset trick every time you're about to die.

Then again why cheat when the whole point of the Ultra Nightmare run is for honor.
