About earlier levels and what to upgrade first... I soon found myself not upgrading earlier stuff at all. This was because I didn't know what awesome weapon I was going to get next; and what mod I would find for it that I'd realize I want to level up.
I'm at the eighth or ninth mission now and only have invested a single upgrade point into the Combat Shotgun. Worth it, because I have fully upgraded mods for the Rocket Launcher, Heavy AR, Gauss Cannon and Super Shotgun (This also because I've gone back to previous missions to scrounge them for secrets and more upgrades).
While we're on early upgrades; when you get the Argent energy upgrades that allow you to improve max health, armor, or ammo... fully invest in ammo on every one you find until it's maxed; then upgrade health or armor. Playing effectively by getting glory kills can keep you constantly topped up on health; but some of the more powerful weapons can and will eat through ammo to the point of frustration if you don't have your ammo stock upgraded. Running out of ammo on your favorite/most useful weapon during that fight can be painful.
For the other suit upgrades e.g. dexterity, equipment, powerups... if you're interested in getting all the secrets with less hassle so you can get upgrades for all your other stuff; invest first in the radar to make secrets appear on your map and hear bleeps whenever you're near them. Otherwise put points in Dexterity for faster weapon swap and movement, the last upgrade for the one on the left makes you immune to red barrel explosions, and I don't care about the other ones as they're for equipment (the silly grenade and later a useless hologram) and for powerups (purely situational; it's not as if the powerups appear all that often; though having them last longer does seem cool).
Sorry I know this is an old thread but one of the top Google searches. Overall I agree with the post apart from this part.
Personally think the pistol is valuable all the way through. Allows you to save ammo for the set piece fights. Upgraded pistol is viable to kill amy human size demon, and some of the larger ones situational basis.
I agree. Pistol saved my ass so many times when I ran out of ammo.
1. Rocket Launcher
2. Gauss cannon
3. Plasma rifle
4. Heavy assault rifle
5. Super shotgun
6. Combat shotgun
7. Pistol
8. Chaingun
2. Rocket launcher with Lock-on mod is easier to use and requires less skill than Remote Detonate.
3.Gauss Cannon with any mod. Both are strong, I used both. But Precision Bolt is more efficient on Nightmare difficulty in my opinion because it charges fast for a ton of single target damage. Siege Mode is better on lower difficulties because you can afford to stay in place and tank some hits. And it 1 shots a lot of demons. Drawback, takes a lot of time to charge and slows or roots you in place.
4. Super Shotgun with Explosive Shot. Explosive Shot is better in every way than Charged Burst.
Does more damage for less ammo, area of effect damage, charges faster, bigger range, is good against any enemy. Explosive Shot is a better faster grenade. And this mode is good at any point in the game. Charged Burst takes too long to charge and is only "alright" in the first 2 missions (at most). Late game it's useless because it wastes Super Shotgun ammo. And on top of that it's not good against many demons. Against some demons it does too much damage, against other it does not do enough.
5. Plasma Rifle with Stun Bomb because it can be used offensively and defensively. If you are in trouble you can use it to stun demons to give yourself some breathing room if you need or you can immobilize them making it easier for you to dish out damage.
The plasma rifle sucks, you can use it just for the mod.
The Pistol, Heavy Assault Rifle and Chaingun ... are not great.
6. Heavy Assault Rifle with Micro Missiles is not bad when you are out of ammo on the other weapons. Tactical Scope is good only for killing Lost Souls from huge distance.
7. Chaingun with any mod. Both are ok, depends on which one you like. The weapon looks cool but the other ones mentioned are better.
8. Pistol. Horrible weapon:D. Use it to prepare Zombies for glory kills. Even fists are better.
*9*. BFG (Big ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Gun) this has no mods or upgrades. This is just a tip: don't use it unless you really need it. It 1 shots everything and it's great when you get overwhelmed by demons.
Good luck man.
