DOOM

Bad performance but alt-tab doubles my performance ... sometimes
Well i've had framedrops as low as around 30-35 fps and after playing for about 2 hours, tabbing out and back in DOOM, i noticed that i had around 90 fps at the same place where before i tabbed-out into windows i had around 45-50 fps.

Since then i start DOOM and alt-tab out and in until the framerate is .. "fixed". Today it didn't work so far.

I've had this with Assassins Creed Black Flag as well, the solution there was to force VSync and Triple Buffering with D3doverrider. Well, since DOOM runs on OpenGL i tried forcing triple buffering in the nVidia Settings and it seemed to work ... most of the times, but today for example i tried alt-tabbing for 10 minutes and it didn't work and i basically just gave up..

Does anyone have any idea how i can permanently fix that? :/

My System is an i7 with 12 GB of RAM and a Geforce 960 GTX with the latest drivers, running Windows 10 x64

i green, i idiot May 16, 2016 @ 10:40am
vsync gets disabled when you tab, search for vsync or triblebuffering in forum. There are others with your problem

Also turn off ALL overlays...Stream, Nvidia, etc. all include overlays.

When you alt-tab out the game then back in, you're flushing the VRAM cache. And if not VRAM then you're definitely clearing something that has built up and start to bog down performance.

I'm gonna try it out now, thanks!

Yea i have been thinking about the VRAM thing or something or other. It's not the VRAM i guess, GPU-Z always shows my VRAM almost maxed out regardless if i tabbed-out or just back in.

There's probably a memory leak in the game. Hearing too many people have the same problem.
The behaviour of the problem really points to mem leak.

Yep, this is an issue with 760,770,780 and 960. Not everone with the cards have the issues. I've also seen a few with 970's that seem to have the exact same bug.

There seem to be variations on what will fix it. For me, it was re-installing my graphics drivers. Sometimes a particular fix for the performance just completely stops working - like in your case, alt tabbing no longer works. In my case, re-installing GPU drivers stopped working.

I feel like there are a number of different triggers for the bug, each with different fixes.

I had success in sweeping my display drivers and re-installing them - but, again, the performance was only temporarily fixed.

Its a widespread issue, so hopefully the fix is being worked on at id.

So... no community fixes at all, other than alt tabbing, relaunching, and reinstalling GPU drivers. For some people no fix works, and they work for some - and randomly stop working.

correct, the GPU keeps fully running on doom while its alt tabbed. Nothing seems to be released.

The flaw in the idea of a memory leak is, once bugged, the issue will persist through system restarts... you can trigger the issue to go away if your lucky, but only for a time. It's a very weird bug. It's more like a cache on the HD that goes bad, but clearing all of the nvidia caches doesnt seem to fix it. Same goes for the Doom caches of data, although some people report deleting one particular doom directory fixes the issue temporarily.

Have you guys tried clearing/flushing your Memory Cache everynow and then while playing?
That's not something you can see even on task manager.

Hm even forcing vsync off (either in-game or with nVidia C.P. or with r_swapinterval 0) didn't seem to improve anything. It seemed to run fine yesterday, i really am out of ideas.

What kind of tool can you recommend to flush my memory cache

Interesting. I would look at the config file created then, its probably bugged.
Try deleting the config file, redoing all your graphical settings and see if performance is better.
Once performance decreases, repeat the process and see if performance is back up.

Yeah, doing that has no effect. I can delete all of the config files generated, and temp doom files... same for nvidia temp and caches. None of this resets the performance.

I'm guessing its some middleware the game uses, but I have no idea

Also, for anyone reading with the issue, adjusting graphics settings is one of the biggest triggers for the performance bug... so dont adjust the settings after attemping a fix for the issue.
