DOOM

Great game, unfortunately too repetitive!
Old school FPS fan here (original Quake etc) however I haven't played an FPS in over 10 years however Doom brought nostalgia back so I thought what the hell! Unfortunately I think I have perhaps being spoiled by games like Skyrim, Fallout, etc so finding the lack of story here not really enhancing the kill 100 enemies rinse repeat for me. I'm thinking of requesting a refund and wait for at least a 50% sale.

I'm not interested in multiplayer either

TL;DR

Great game just too repetitive for myself. However despite that I do think it's an exceptionally polished game, just not worth £40 for single player

What? A repetitive Doom???

Seriously tho, repetitive action is the entire M.O. of the original Doom series. I know this'll be considered utter blasphemy by some fans, but this is the most fun I've had in an online multiplayer FPS game since I was playing Quake 3 Arena on my Dreamcast thru SegaNet.

Definitely think the game should be longer, but I love the ultra smooth framerate and sharp clean graphics. Maybe I'm biased tho cuz an old injury to my left hand makes it impossible to play w/ a keyboard, so I tend to get into multiplayer FPS only if they're decent w/ gamepads.

You do realize that all Doom is, is a run and gun game. The other dooms were just the same run and gun. You want a full fleshed out story go else where you should of known better.

It's possibly because I outgrew FPS games, I agree it's one of the smoothest FPS I played, I personally just can't justify price.

If im only interested in single player yeah

value is subjective - for me the value isn't worth £40 for others it's probably worth £60 so I shall wait. :)

yeah ofc, value is just subjective. it has nothing to do with how much work and money was put into this...

The same amount as any other game, doesn't mean I consider it of equal value as other games I enjoy more at similar prices. DOOM has a 12hr single player I read, however I have being playing games with over tripple that time for same/less price. As I said, i've being spoiled by games offering immense hours of gameplay, that's only possible here with multiplayer

Again the game isn't bad, it's actually pretty darn good unfortunately I expected more

Any game is repetitive. Run around in CoD, see enemy, point weapon in general direction, spray, get kills, move on. Doom is repetitive but its a ton of fun. It wasn't until the very end the game that I was starting to feel stale. And that is mostly because the only weapon I used the entire game was the combat shotgun. I never even touched the other weapons. The game was fantastic. Very rarely will I say such a short game was worth a full $60.

86, yet calls himself old school.

Mate, I am gonna express my thoughts right now. However, don't think that it will be addressed you particularly.

So:

People are dumb af. They call some games repetitive but they have no idea what repetitive is. All games are in some way repetitive. All FPS's are "go there kill that". All RPG's are "go there, kill that maybe collect and most important - come back." almost all games are built around repetitiveness. You can't make game non repetitive because it is not possible. You can't just make every thing in game different from each other. So just play game, have fun and forget that word.

I was 7 when Doom came out, I was 8 when I played it. What other FPS games existed before that?

I agree every game is repetitive however after playing some more I believe I pinpointed the issue. Due to my disability I require using voice commands, because of this I aren't able to fully experience the fast paced gun galore action. Possibly because of this is why

You know, that's why I liked this game. So many FPS games' campaigns try to be deep. They all have long 'DAT FEELZ' cutscenes, over complicated backstories, and talk, talk, talk. I do like deep stuff, but too much ruins the fun gameplay for me.

This game doesn't mess around. "You want action? WELL, HERE YOU GO! FIGHT LIKE HELL!" It lets you jump in to the action. Doom Marine's personality perfectly represents what this game's direction is. Brutal and honest.

Fallout and Skyrim are both open world RPGs. You can't really compare them to Doom because that would be like comparing spaghetti to hamburgers. If you like one doesn't necessarily mean you should like the other

That said, this is why I fear the game will not be well received critically and, ultimately commercially. I hope I'm wrong.

I feel like your opinion is one that will be quite common, if not of the whole game, then of the "arenas." (As we've already seen with IGN's review.)

This game goes for the jugular of people who still enjoy pure action for action's sake, for whom there's no such thing as "repetitive," as long as what's being iterated and built upon is fun in the first place. People who can still sit down and play Space Invaders, Asteroids, Xevious, 1942, classic Doom, classic Quake, Descent, and in the case of more modern games, perhaps Earth Defense Force or Ace Revolution. Games which are, at their heart, literally the same gameplay loop repeating ad infinitum. Straightforward, looping, challenging, adrenaline fueled fun for its own sake. And yes, largely mindless (except on a visceral, reflexive level of tactics maybe.)

But, while there is a market for that (I'm part of it,) I fear that market is not so large as id would like to believe. Video games have moved on and grown up in many respects since the days of Doom et al, and people do - and without being unreasonable - expect something more for the full MSRP of a major AAA release these days.

For those of us who love the iterative and progressively more challenging combat, when we see someone say it's too repetitive we think, "What are you talking about? It's fun and intense. What more do we need?" But those who have either outgrown or never were fully satiated by that kind of ceaseless twitch gameplay with nothing in between (or not much at least) feel there's just not much carrot with the boom stick.

I can understand that, and if I weren't looking specifically for exactly the experience this Doom provides, I'd probably even agree. I just hope it doesn't damn this series to either becoming something unrecognizable as a Doom game in the future, or ensure we never see any sequels after this. It really does seem like the response is going to be good, but not great. And publishers in 2016 don't do good but not great. They do multi-million sellers, or they stop putting money into the projects.

I found your post really interesting and agree. I actually hope DOOM becomes successful and prompts numerous DLCs. I honestly think it's exceptionally polished and despite what others may think I do appreciate it... It's a modern old school game!
