Assault Rifle vs. Plasma Gun

just got both of these weapons on the 2nd map (one of which was in a semi-secret area), and between the Heavy Assault Rifle and the Plasma Gun, which should I upgrade first once I get to Mission 3 (aka "Map 3")?

was thinking about adding the Micro Missiles to the Assault Rifle at first, but I already have the Explosive Rounds for the Shotgun equipped and upgraded it with the Bigger Boom. so i'm kinda looking at the Plasma Gun for the moment, which is why i'm asking for your help on this manner.

The heat blast on the plasma rifle is good to deal with the cannon fodder as imps, possesed ♥♥♥♥♥ and these demons die instantly by it.

So far stun was pretty useless for me, tho I guess it can be good to have free shots on fast moving targets such as hell knights, revenants and barons.

Rocket rack on assault rifle is underpowered, but once fully upgraded, it is overpowered and kinda stops being fun to use.

The precision scope is pretty good for headshots, and once fully upgraded it is really awesome against mancubuses.

If you're on nightmare, I'd recommend the micro missles or the stun bomb so you have an efficient way to deal with hell knights early on.

Interesting, different strategies. Did not play NM yet. stunning enemies may be more important

I only honestly use the Plasma Rifle for the Stun Grenade ability, which works incredibly well with weapons like my fully upgraded super shotty...

Assault Rifle early on is really nice when you fully upgrade the micro missiles though for dealing with larger enemies earlier on.

Once you update the Heat Blast on the Plasma gun it slaughters Hel Knights, as well.
Also, Plama gun stun feature is INSANELY useful.

Stun enemy with the plasma rifle, switch to something powerful like the super shotgun, BAM. Tons of damage. Use the quick switch button to quickly swap between the two instead of using the weapon wheel.

Micro missiles also seem to have a small amount of guidance. If you fire them near a target, they will curve to hit it. They're like sticky grenades -- they hit the target, wait about a second, then explode. So you can pump out all 6 pretty fast into a group for some crowd control, or use them on bigger/heavier targets.

The scope on the assault rifle is great with the extra headshot damage then the final more damage upgrade. The plasma rifle is good but I usually was saving the ammo for the gauss rifle instead.

Plasma when upgraded is IMO one of the best weapons in Doom. Which is kinda cool, because it was my favorites in the orginal builds of Doom and Doom II.

The plasma gun is very much a defensive weapon due to heat blast being an AOE attack around Doomguy that knocks enemies back and stun bomb being able to leave enemies immoble while the heavy assault rifle is excellent for accurate shots and its micro missiles is fantastic for crowd control as they are great at staggering enemies with decent enough splash damage to catch small enemies next to big ones that have been stuck with the missiles thus staggering them in the process.

I would go heavy rifle anytime (sniper upgrades are strong until the end, very ammo conservative).

Plasma's nova is strong against weak enemies that are close. Letting imps, let alone other mobs, that close and rely on skill that actually cannot be fired whenever you need = suicide (plus you can get rid of imps by anything, one headshots from any distance works as well).

Stun gun just depletes my ammo way to fast to use it often. I used it in mid game in tight spaces with Pinkies, but mastered super shotgun is better.
