Never been this way, check the bottom of the box for any information regarding if does need initial connection with Steam and that is it.
If you only want to play the game with Steam-overlay enabled, simply add a non-Steam game to my library.

yeah i think thats what it makes you do anyway. ive only every bought 1 physical pc game before for steam and when i put the disk in the pc it said steam is required+cdkey so i signed in and then it started installing the game directly to my steam library and i never needed the disk ever again or the cd-key

FYI the entire game still has to be downloaded from Steam. All the box has is your key.

Wow. I never buy retail but for some stupid reason I bought this on Amazon. I thought...besides saving a bit I'll have the whole thing on the disk. Now it looks (due to my weak internet) that I will be playing this sometime tomorrow, maybe. What a colossal disappointment. :(
so, it does work. i bought the game for $37.99 at cd keys dot com and after a few hours of fraud avoidance / verification, i received a scan of the CD keys. In the Steam "Add a game" interface, I selected "Activate a product on steam" and activated DOOM and the included multiplayer DLC.

That was 10 hours ago. The download should complete in a few minutes (despite being in Argentina, which must have the worst internet in the world...). My vaporizer is charging and i expect to be slaying badass demons with big effing guns in just a few moments.

here's your fun fact of the day, Doom fans

"There is a scene in 'The Color of Money' where Tom Cruise shows up at a pool hall with a custom pool cue in a case. 'What do you have in there?' asks someone. 'Doom.' replied Cruise with a cocky grin. That, and the resulting carnage, was how I viewed us springing the game on the industry."

John Carmack on why the game was named "Doom"

I bought the DVD from EB Games.

Got a Steam activation code in the DVD case. Downloaded it in 1 hour. No problems.

If I buy Doom in CD and download the rest of the game through steam(like you guys say), will I later own the game? I mean will it be like I have paid it on steam online? When I go to the Doom's store page will it says ''you already own the game'' ? Will it count the hours I've played the game?
yes. all of the above

Well, if you bought the CD Key, then yes.
