Adaptive Sync (AMD Freesync) not working
Using R9 295x2 and Radeon Software 16.5.2 I am getting a lot of screen tearing. In the video settings for Vertical Sync in Doom I select Adaptive Sync but it keeps putting the setting to off.

Is it running in full screen mode? It must for FreeSync to work.

Yes it is in full screen mode

FYI, no luck getting this to work. Setting Adaptive Sync will not stick and will get massive screen tearing unless I turn VSYNC on in DOOM.

It looks to me like Freesync (AMD) is not supported with this game. For reference, HW is R9 295x2 and BENQ XL2730Z 144Hz Freesync gaming monitor.

Oh, that's bad.

We have the same monitor, OP. I turned off VSYNC within the game and forced it on through Radeon Settings (edit the DOOM profile). That worked for me.

Nvidia G-Sync isn't working either. It's suppose to work in either borderless or fullscreen, but no matter which one I choose, Doom refuses to leave borderless for me to even disable v-sync. I have to disable windows desktop composite (Aero) to get tearing, which is fine I guess. Tearing at high fps on a high refresh rate isn't that bothersome to me. Besides, gotta consider the input lag... Doom isn't the snappiest game out there. Not a good idea to add more delay to it. **** all sync tech! :D

FreeSync worked perfectly, in 16.5.2, for me. 16.5.2.1 seems to have broken it for me. I came to the Steam forums, hoping someone had found a fix.

I thought I was the only one. 16.5.2.1 definitely broke it for me. Its a shame, since those drivers fixed a lot of the AMD performance issues. I guess it wouldn't be AMD if we had a perfect driver release...

i have same problem:
R9 290X + Samsung U24E590+16.5.2.1 = FreeSyng does not WORK! Turning on V-Sync and fps go to 20 from 30

I installed 16.5.2 on another computer, and FreeSync works perfectly. I pressed my luck and tried 16.5.3, and FreeSync worked with that driver too. But for my main test PC, no driver makes FreeSync work. It's really weird. That suggests to me that some setting, somewhere, is borked, but I don't know where it would be. (the main test rig is a Haswell i7, while the rig where FreeSync works is a SkyLake i7... otherwise, both rigs are very similar).

Freesync only works within the monitors specified numbers for example 45/75 herz anything below or above can have screen tearing seeing freesync only works within those parameters.

Some games can have more screen tearing then others as always, not really the games fault its just the combination of evrything [hardware/fps/fps drops and spikes]

I most ofton use the fps control in the games section [drivers options] to limit fps to my max reported herz at wich freesync works.
Sadly doom is one of those games that [for me] just keep going over 100fps with it limited to 75 causing massive stuttering, so i use doom with Vsync on as to wich doom syncs to 60 >.> making the freesync window even smaller [45/60hz] luckely it can hold 60 no problems but 75 would look somewhat smoother.

Do keep in mind specific specs on a monitor may result in you needing a DP 1.2 cable, my screen is faily low spec so im running a 1.0 cable.

The best way to get most out of freesync is to get a freesync monitor with a high refresh rate and high freesync errr ''rate'' for example a 144hz screen wich freesync from 30hz up to 144hz.

Edit : if your monitor has a low freesync window like 45hz/75hz have no worrys 75hz freesynced feels much more responsive and smoother then running a 75hz monitor seeing just 75hz isnt ''synced'' i tossed out my 144hz screen for this one seeing i tried it at a friend and comming back home made my 144hz screen feel jaggy.
Not to mention running 75hz all the time is way less demanding then staying at 100hz+

However i cannot advice getting a freesync 4k monitor at the moment seeing most work within 45hz/60hz wich is a tough window to hold at 4k unless you trow massive wads of cash against your PC. Buyers Beware.

Freesync worked fine on my setup. As they were saying above there are some guidelines you have to meet to utilize it. I had to use a compatible monitor which was an Acer XR34 but there are lots others, a Displayport cable, R9 Fury, and framerate had to fall between 30-75 frames per second(far as Im aware of). I had a lot of times where frametime was above 75 so i set frame rate target control so it wouldnt go over. I think its a little more complicated with a crossfire setup and freesync but im not sure! Hope you get it working! for reference;

Xeon 1270V3
32GB RAM
R9 Fury
Acer XR 34 (3440x1440) DP Cable 1.1

The point I was getting at is FreeSync worked fine with 16.5.2, but 16.5.2.1 broke it. 16.5.3 has worked better so far. I'm using a BenQ XL2730Z, and FreeSync works very well on that monitor with almost every game. The XL2730Z has a low floor and a high ceiling for its window of operation. As a matter of fact, I have plenty of games that play at 200fps and still don't tear. The XL2730 has been a good monitor, so far.
