Deadspace is one of the games that did an amazing job incorporating the hud into the character itself so there was no screen clutter at all.
But yeah dont be so quick to judge based on what ifs missing. The design choices that were let go were done so for functionality reasons. Times have changed, not all oldschool features work well with todays modern games.

Maybe taking off the helmet is some kind of big reveal at the end of the game. A monster rips it off or something perhaps and reveals that you yourself are a possessed marine!
That would be kind of cool, or maybe cyborg? There is/was a leaked trailer recently that started with your character rising from a (operating?)table and a robot seems to be caring for you and is talking to you. If you havn't seen it I might have a link to it, just message me privately for it.
