Combat Shotgun Outclassed?
So is there any real advantage to the Combat Shotgun once you get better weapons? The Super Shotgun just seems to be better than Burst Fire, and the Grenade Launcher upgrade is nice, but ultimately outclassed by a rocket launcher with Remote Detonation.

I really like all the weapon choices, but the Combat Shotgun just doesn't seem to have a purpose once you get other weapons. Every other weapon and it's mods seem to have some place, but the poor Combat Shotgun (and the pistol, I guess) just seem to fall by the wayside.

The pistol n shotgun are the 1st items you pick and never seen again after that, i dont ugrade either of those weapons for that very reason. The super shotgun in SP is my sole weapon all others take a back seat, allowed out only after the shotty is too low on ammo.

It's all personal preference.

Simply becuase I got really good with the explosive shells, I still prefer it over the SSG - espeically with the Mastery on the explosive shell.

I find the triple shot near useless, but there are some people who really love it.

It's still effective throughout the entire game, so if you enjoy it, it's there.

I had a ton of fun with the mastered ss and both mods mastered on the combat shotgun. Triple shot is pretty useless over all, but there is something insanely fun about putting 3 shots into them then quick switching to the ss for 2 more follow ups...

very few enemies survive that at close range...I'd stun pinkies and just do that volley of shells right in their face...didn't have to shoot them in the back...

i did a nightmare run where i only used the SS and combat shotgun with mods. when you master the combat shotgun's explosive mod it is pretty useful for sniping enemies from a distance. it's outclassed by the RL, but it's still viable late game. i used to think the triple shot was worthless, but if you use it and switch to the ss immediately after, you can shred enemies really easily. case in point: my video of the spider mastermind fight with the SS and combat triple shot.

the pistol is still pretty useful for the normal zombies late game. it's main purpose seems to be saving ammo.

I wish the combat shotgun was buffed a little. I should not be forced into using the upgrades and secondary functions in order to make the weapon viable compared to the other weapons. Perhaps just making it deal more damage would make the gun a lot more fun to use.

i agree. the normal shotgun was still incredibly useful in Doom 2, even with the SS available. i think giving the combat shotgun the same range as the one in the original Doom games would have been great.

I don't know what difficulty OP is playing on, or what his specific concerns are, but I'll say this:

-the low dmg output of the combat shotty in late game was useful to complete certain challenges or setting up easy glory kills with weaker enemies

...I thought I had more to say...but guess not. I honestly upgraded completely to the SS. And honestly, as I was going for all masteries, I found, at least on the default difficulty, every weapon is still quite viable in late game.

I feel like in this circumstance, it is reasonable that you should be take into account the upgrades in evaluating the utility of a weapon. Especially since one of the reference points is the super shotgun, which doesn't get upgrades. (And op directly references the RL WITH one of its upgrades.)

the starting weapons are just that, starting weapons, they won't be as good as a Super shotgun or railgun, but when it comes to weak/medium demons, they are just fine, and if you master Combat shotgun's explosive shell, you can easly take out groups of unwilling, possesed, imps or possesed soldiers, which can be nice

not only that, but have the shotgun's pellets go out a little further like an actual solid metal slug would do

The pistol is laughably weak and there's really no point to it.

Combat Shotgun Explosive Shells are useful for killing little bunches of Imp ♥♥♥♥♥ when a Rocket Launcher just takes too long. Charged Burst, while mostly unused, is great at softening up Hell Knights and the like.

Everything except Gauss Cannon, Chaingun and Rocket Launcher eventually don't do enough damage fast enough to stop the big bads from violating your meaty bits. Sure you can use it, but it's much faster to just Siege Mode everything.

Just try not to think about it while you're vaporizing everything

I'd have to say the Mastered micro-missiles on the AR, combined with Rich Get Richer is the most stupid OP thing in the game.

Ah! Equipment Power ... yea that one was so vague I wasn't sure what it did.. ((I DID test it out with the holograms and normal frag grenades and it didn't seem to do anything.
