FRAPs is a popular video game capture software that will also show your current FPS in an overlay. Also, I know that Steam has an in-game FPS counter as well.

Steam > Settings > In-Game > 'In-game FPS Counter' ... then select your desired screen location from the drop-down.

There's an option in-game under the Advanced settings menu. It's called "show performance metrics". Low will display the FPS, medium and high will show more system information. No need to use third party software.

It's at the very bottom of the advanced settings.
