i believe in the "this is actually a rebootquel instead of a straight reboot" theory.
doomguy dies at the end of old doom 1 episode 1 when he's ambushed. the rest of the games are his soul seeking holy vengeance. somehow this is the same doomguy but sent through time and space to an alternate universe at the beginning of the apocalypse, millenia before a new world happens and things eventually repeat.
the giant demon that rules hell that he defeats before the game started, according to game references, could very well be the icon of sin at the end of doom 2.
It's a sequel and a reboot.
+1
"NO, IT'S A SOLID, IT'S A SOLID!"
I just got to a point in the game where Samuel mentions something along the lines of me being "The only flesh and blood to cross dimensions" which is a point to the Jesus theory.
One day, in battle, the son of the leader of the knight sentinels is killed. In his emotionally weakened state, the demons offer the leader of the knight sentinels to bring back his son IF he shows the forces of hell where his knights rest.
He accepts. The knight sentinels are slaughtered and Argent D'Nur is taken over and merged with hell.
But what he got after the deed was done wasnt his son... It was the ultimate evil itself; THE ICON OF SIN. The leader of the knight sentinels got pissed and started killing every demon in sight. The seraphim saw this and granted him immense power, strength, speed and of course, the praetor suit which could absorb the demons life force (Argent plasma) for the benefit of the DOOM SLAYER. (Or just health, armor and ammo ingame)
The Doom Slayer kinda killed every demon and scared them so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ they only went into deeper pits of hell. In a last ditch effort to not get killed, the demons lured the Doom Slayer into some temple i forgot the name off, destroyed it with the Doom Slayer inside and then trapped him in the sarcphagus we see at the start of the game.
Fast forward a little and the game starts.
