In normal circumstances that would be something to be ashamed of, but considering alot of game developers and publishers are doing that nowadays (likely due to the unusual popularity of console gaming) then i'd say we can let this one pass.
but then again that was on the "hurt me plently" diffuctly so that ain't saying much.
I'd argue that the first half was easy enough, that the extra fire powered isn't needed. If I remember right I just went to down with the rocket launcher on him for most of the fight. I thought the first half was brutally unfair for the Cyber Demon, it's the second half of the fight where he killed me several times. Doom is fairly generous with it's ammo and health drops though, so ammo conservation isn't exactly a priority in this game. I think the developers did a good job with the game balance/fights, but I only played on "Hurt me plenty".
I'm more upset with the crashing, errors and stuff just not working properly in this game.
dodging the swipes can be fairly easy once you get the pattern down; generally you jump to dodge the low one, and then as you land, crouch to dodge the second. i REALLY wish they would add a non-toggle version of crouch as it would make doing this much easier for me at least.
It's not that the new one is 'easy'...it's that its a 'boss', with it's own kind of scripting or w/e built in to be a one on one confrontation with a lot of mechanics you need to learn in order to beat it.
and that is kind of the thing: it's REALLY easy once you know exactly what to do. Results may vary first time around, though. Some players may crush it immediately, but I would be surprised if they struggled against a cyberdemon in Doom 2 to begin with.
the original was just a huge enemy that could take a ton of ammo to bring down...From what I remember, you almost always faced one in a wide open space...and crowds didn't matter either way because of the infighing (if you ran away from it, it just cleared out all other enemies for you, which was kind of a favor)...I know there were a few times where it was meant as a trap...the level 'tricks and traps' for example; you weren't supposed to remain in the room with like 15 barons and a cyberdemon, only to stir them up and close the door when you leave haha. So I never remember it being something that was all that difficult, or at least an enemy that required all that much thought to take out.
well...yeah, the thing is cake with various weapon mods that would be very difficult to master before you reach that boss...and runes that I don't think are even available before that level.
I just mean a lot of guys are trumpeting how easy it is...And I don't think that is a reflection of the first encounter with it. I started on UV, and had been pretty careful about upgrade paths and what to invest in...and It took a couple tries just to learn what exactly each attack was. 2 hits by those waves and it's over, one by that laser thing.
but then doing it again almost completely upgraded with air control and unlimited ammo as long as I didn't get hit, etc...I agree with you...it's not even a fight. It's pretty clear that the boss battles are all designed around 'your first time'...not when you come back upgraded.
it was a 'boss' in the way the original Doom's episodes handle it, as in it was the last thing you would have to kill...but it was still 'just an enemy'...just as the baron's were for the shareware.
The modern thing developers do with all kinds of different mechanics and this and that with bosses wasn't around back then...not a criticism of the originals, or even praising what they do now...but facing a cyberdemon as a 'boss' in Doom 1, vs. just an enemy in Doom 2...was in no way different; that's all i'm getting at.
The Icon of Sin was the only modern boss of the originals, though. That was the only one that had a specific mechanic outside of 'just shoot it' like every other enemy.
Then there's the final classic incarnation of the Cyberdemon in DOOM 3, that required the soul cube.
Agreed. I still use 'originals' as Doom 1/2/FD (I guess, even though that was levels outsourced to respected mods iirc)...
yeah Doom 3 had 'modern' bosses with the guardian and cyberdemon. Both had requirements completely unlike any typical enemy you faced.
Before the Cyberdmeon at the end of The lazarus Lab you already have all runes, including 'saving throw'. Besides that it's very easy to upgrade the assault rifle and double shotgun before the Lazarus Lab. You can even use Siphon grenades to gain life on the Cyberdemon and the rune that boosts your equipment is also easy to max out. So no, sorry, I did not go back upgraded to the Cyberdemon. Although, thanks for the idea :)
