u cant set it to a higher as uve startet with but lower all the time :)
u can play this game as u want to... doesnt matter what achievements u gain or something as long u kill some demons :) u get weapon points also by killing demons... also if u replay a level u will get this weapon points and u be able to carry them over to ur actualy gamestate... but u dont need to do it only for weapon points... thoreticaly u could win the game only with pistol :D
the only need in doom is to kill demons cause thats the sens of the game ;)
Also, try meleeing shield soldiers.
Doom has always been about secrets ? You can play Doom 1 and Doom 2 and Doom 3 without finding 1 secret or opening 1 cabinet in Doom 3.
I don't remember the 3 other Doom having powerups like the new one. Did you even play them ?
also u can try to throw grenades behind them
i dont think he ever has played a doom game... not even doom2016 cause meleeing shielded soldiers causes in ur death ..mostly ^^
Love the game but I don't like the boss fights, so I'm turning down the difficulty to the lowest when fighting them. But, yes, there ARE YouTube-clips with guys killing them (at least the Cyberdemon and the last boss) with the pistol only on Nightmare.
I think the weapon upgrades and some of their master upgrades are both fun and useful. For instance, the Remote Detonation for the Rocket Launcher is very useful for those shield guys - just detonate the rocket when it's behind them. Otherwise I try to get behind them quickly and shoot them with the double barrelled shotgun. The Gauss Cannon with Siege Mode and the master upgrade so you can move with it is insanely good.
I had the exact same feeling, and have tested it on nightmare. (I was very worried you would have to collect all stuff and do challenges everytime I tried a UN run)
The challenges you definitely DONT need to do. They will give you some weapon upgrade points that you get in other ways (just by playing the game)
The runes are not crucial, but some are handy: I would look up their type and location and just get the important ones: especially things like ammo boost, and equipment power if you struggle with ammo and/or health.
The Preator suit upgrades are also not crucial, but as a minimum I would find enough to upgrade your environment resistance (barrell death can happen easy). You can easily find enough on the main path, or just off it - no need to hunt for secret ones.
I would strongly advise getting the Field Drones, at least early on to get one upgrade on each weapon. The weapons basically become x2 or x3 times better once upgraded, even just one or two upgrades.
Honestly, the further you go the more linear the game gets. Field drones and most Praetor suit upgrades are on the main path.
Alright I'll plug along then on normal without cranking it down. I'm already spending most of my Hell Knight fights with pistols (and let me tell you that is a challenge) for want of ammo. I guess that'll come in handy later when I'm trying to pistol down the cyberdemon. I'm hoping future levels don't feature stuff like the blood heart in Foundry (the one with all the threads on various sites with people saying their stuck), and I can stick to killin demons rather than playing Dora the explorer.
I did find one secret by accident, as that happens in the future I'll probably stick to Ammo, since so far I'm pleased to say the majority of enemies feature attacks and mechanics that can be dodged with some good reflexes and footwork (as opposed to another game I play, Diablo 3, where combat success is 90% gear and luck while you facetank unavoidable mechanics that you mostly have to just outgear or outgimmick), with the exception of the shield guys (I'm hardly alone in saying that the feel out of sync with the rest of the game).
The gameplay itself I love, this extra stuff that reminds me of tomb raider mixed with an RPG, not so much. Compared to a similar "reboot," Thief (which also annoyingly refused to call itself Thief 4), Doom 4 (there is one Doom, which came out in 1993) at least did a better job of staying true to the original. Thief 4 was a slaughtered, linear, unfun bastardization of Thief 1-3 that tried to compensate with unlocks and perk points and achievements.
Doom 1 and 2 has the beserk pack and the invulnerability sphere. Doom 3 also has the beserk demon thing at one point too.
On my first run through the game, I did not actively look for any secrets. I still found most of them except for a lot of the classic levels. Sometimes I think you are more likely to run into them by not looking at the map and going the wrong direction. So I really don't know how you could miss a lot of them - but then again, I am always taking less obvious paths out of habit. Just to relive those classic Doom moments of finding the more powerful guns several missions early.
Secondly, about half of the Argent cells and about the same amount of Praetor upgrades and weapon drones aren't secrets - they are usually in plain sight, in main areas. If you are missing those as well, I don't know what to say without sounding rude. They made it very friendly to people who aren't into exploring - they just can only hold your hand so much. Just finding the ones in main areas will provide you with enough upgrades to keep the game progressing well.
And as to Doom being about secrets - well, no, you could say Doom 1/2 were not about secrets, but since they rated you on how many you found after each level, and they provided similar advantages (more health pickups, more ammo, earlier access to weapons), just in a different way, Doom 2016 is very much in the spirit of the originals. Sure, you can play the game without it, but you will be nerfing your power level. Doom games were always easier if you sought out the secrets, so nothing has changed at all.
As to the upgrade systems in general - I will agree that some people won't find them needed in a shooter. Personally, I am thrilled they put them in. You can ignore them if playing on easier difficulties (also, what do you mean by "normal" difficulty?), but they also add some needed variety. I don't know about anyone else, but I honestly got sick of Doom 1/2 years ago - you can only use the same damn guns so many times over the years before they become grating. I was glad to see alternate fire added, and in multiple varieties instead of just totally aping the classic guns 100%.
Health/ammo/armor upgrades? Again, easier difficulties, not really needed. Once you play on nightmare though (and if you are a classic Doom player who appreciated the difficulty of those games, you really should be playing on NM), if you don't upgrade, you will get instagibbed with startling frequency.
As to the "shield guys" - I assume that the person who said "melee" in relation was referring to the older id game tactic with enemies that have a melee attack - and it still works on many of the enemies in Doom 2016 (this method became very common in Quake 2 with Enforcer and Berserker enemy types). Basically, get in their face to trigger their melee attack, and back away before the attack hits you. It locks them into the animation, and you can pummel their face with your shotgun while their shield is swinging wildly through the air. It works fairly well on Hellknights (although the are less predictable) and Mancubuses as well, locking them into melee attacks instead of either chasing you or gunning you down. They don't break the flow of combat if you apply the same tactics that worked in Quake 1/2 (which are close in combat flow to Doom 2016 than Doom 1/2 are). Run in, back up, unload.
Need 25 extra HP? Reload a level, focus on getting the upgrade, and then select continue through the menu to continue with the upgrade on the latest level / checkpoint.
Continue doesn't make you continue the level you selected from the level select, it puts you at the latest location.
If you have the map markers it shouldn't take too long to get a single upgrade that might be located at the beginning.
