i guess the artist did not ever see them ingame in classic doom and just took a glance at some sprite, assumed the stuff hanging down is arms and hands /facepalm
if there is a flawed demon design here is the hell guardians, man they are just bad.
don't even seems to be demons, generic, ugly (but not doom ugly), out of place design.
I liked the fight but hated the design.
ROE had good Boss design but new Doom is lacking in this department.
cyberdemon... bad, not doom at all.
hell guardians .. bad. not doom at all.
spidermastermind... okay.. but too much "gears of war" style.
also the uac zombies are pretty generic and uninspired as well.
and the possessed (the ones with shield) reminds more of strogs than doom enemies.
some of the demons design is what really disappointed me in this game.
good design, barons, hellknights, pinky (a bit too dino but okay), revenant, mancubi.
in short every demon they took inspiration from the originals.
but all the new ones?.. meh
that made me laugh a little too hard.
Overall I agree...I still think the cyberdemon is too walrus'y, but the fight was great and the whole thing of it raising its arm to make a spike corridor thing was awesome.
Barons, Hell Knights, and Revenants are perfect imo. I love how the baron actually is noticeably bigger than the knights, which is how they were described in the originals...but it was just a color switch to the same sprite in game.
Pinky and Imps are tolerable, but a little too 'not hellish' imo.
agreed on Hell Guards, the weakest looking boss(s) in the game for sure...but my most disliked demon was the summoner...That is more because the Arch Ville was my favorite from Doom II, and the summoner 'takes its place' in this new one, but it sucks in comparison.
yep painfully missing a proper Arch Vile here.
it's a shame..
they should have stayed close to the originals like they did for Baron, lost souls are also ok.
imp I can live with..
cyberdemon.. the fight was good but monster design meh... Doom 3 version way better or they could have done so much better by staying close to the original.
revenants are cool.. one of the best re-design here...
You won't hear me complain about there not being arch viles, those were annoying little b@stards in doom 2 along with the pain elementals.
Agree on hell guardian, easily the worst enemy design in the game, looks like something out of Darksiders 2
Cyber demon as well I never liked ever since we saw the E3, it's not "too" bad but I really wanted it to look more in-tone with the original cybie
I think they ditched the arch viles because they would have been contraproductive to the design: the problem with the arch viles is that you have to take cover against them and considering id annihilated all of the hitscan based enemies for this game having an enemy type like that would have made no sense. The summoners are a great substitute for two reasons:
- They are new so you don't have a situation like you had in Doom 3 where the arch viles were just weak compared to Doom 2 and they ended up as a letdown because of that.
- Their teleport ability makes them tricky opponents and that mechanic actually promotes movement.
What I missed was the pain elemental + there could have been a "swarmlike" enemy type too like the spiders were in D3 but hey, you can't have everything. I found the revenants to be on the weak side too, they are extremely inaccurate with their rockets.
