DOOM How-To: Seek and Destroy – A Rune Trial Guide on How to QUICKLY and EASILY Beat It
Had a hard time with this one that I decided to make a guide. I hope this proves useful to someone.

Here's a step-by-step DOOM quick and easy guide on how to complete the Seek and Destroy rune trial, which requires you to kill 3 hell knights with death from above glory kills. You are only equipped with just a heavy assault rifle for this rune trial.

The gameplay video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UNXQbQ9PFs

Summary:

What you need to do:

1 To make things simpler, make sure you have enabled the "Glory Kill Highlight" setting under Settings -- Game.

TIP: Ignore (but avoid) the Unwilling; you only have a limited ammo cache to work with in this rune trial.

2 Expend two sets of micro missiles on a hell knight as soon as one pops up. You will significantly soften one up if you do this, eschewing the need for you to pump a bevy of rounds into the thing.

3. As soon as you do, retreat to the top of one of the two stairs and prevent the hell knight from climbing up to the landing. With you on higher ground, Death from Above glory kills will be easier to do.

4 As soon as it turns blue, jump up and towards the hell knight while looking down and pressing F to Death from Above glory kill the schmucks.

Tip: It's okay to miss one Death from Above glory kill; the trial spawns one hell knight after another. However, if you miss your second Death from Above glory kill, it might be better to restart the trial owing to the limited ammo cache in this rune trial.

Good advice, as this one was a bit annoying...

My tactic was just focusing on headshots to soften them up. I can't remember exactly, but I thought the mini rockets take like 3 'bullets' each...so using the rockets ended up depleting my ammo quicker than just bursting on their heads when possible...either way, though, this is one of those that you'll eventually get with practice.

Also, i never paid attention to this either...but don't the trials chose the mods for you? I don't think entering the trial with the scope mod equipped works that way, I think you have rockets no matter what. I had both mods available when I got to this one, and I could not swap mods in the trial. Other trials, also, would give you a shotgun or something with no mod even if you'd acquired it in game. I think the loadout for all trials is pre-selected regardless of progress in the campaign.

Thanks! Very true. And yes, this bit was frustrating.

I tried that; took me more than 13 tries. When I learned what I outlined in the videos, I beat the trial in two tries.

I think (not sure) that you're right. I actually thought of this after I've uploaded the video. By then it was of course too late to change the wordings of the first two slides. Thanks for pointing this out!

Don't you have double jump by the time of that rune trial? I remember being frustrated at first with it, but once it clicked that I could just stand next to the staggered Hell Knight, double jump up and then melee them below, the challenge became so much easier because you didn't have to worry about your elevation anymore, double jumping gets you high enough to trigger a death from above kill by just jumping stationary up.

Thanks for the tip! I found that not retreating to the stairs makes me vulnerable to the pesky unwilling. Safer and more convenient to run up the stairs.

But yes, your tip is very useful outside this trial/areas devoid of other enemies.

Thanks I similarly had tried a dozen times or so, trying to use headshots and to position the hell knights at the bottom of the stairs, always failing before the last kill, either by time or running out of ammo.

Using the tips here with the mini rockets (I used two salvos since I had the "use less ammo per mini rocket" upgrade) and to kill them whenever with the double jump kill to finish it in 3 tries.

Cheers!

Glad to have helped you out! Don't forget to like the video if it's not too much of a hassle. :D

Also don't what Nathan said---the V-jump boots are your friend. Double jump FTW. :happyalien:

Biggest tip without the double jump - stand at the middle of the stairs. When he does his annoying jump, back up fast then shoot his head to death.

If you're standing at the TOP of the stairs and he does his jump to the top you're already screwed, but this way he's in the middle or just near the top and any glory kill counts as above.

I died like 20 times and then gave up on the stairs. 2 mini rockets then just shoot him in the head and double jump when he turns blue and boom , he goes down with the kill from above. Got it on the second try, NP.

Different strokes for different folk I guess. I find it simpler if I do it on the stairs. Thanks for the feedback TXGUY!

I tried this forever with no success because I was trying to go up the stairs to invoke the death from above kill. Most times the stagger wore off too soon and I missed my chance. The advice to double jump to do the glory kill solved it for me. I got it on the very first try. Thanks!

Jesus...here I though it was one of the easiest trials......
