Music not hardcore enough?
I got Doom last night and started playing around 1:30AM after getting home work. I'm loving it except the music doesn't feel hardcore enough, is it just me?

yeah, it's not a cheap dubstep/metal mix like I feared at the beginning...
it's truly impressive heavy. hardcore electro/metal beast, in the game it goes down too much but if you listen to the tracks outside of the game it's a real treat and this comes from a NIN and industrial fan.
btw. you can find a pretty decent sound rip from the game files on the web if you know where to look..
the guy is good, Wolfenstein New Order OST has also its moments but this one is really strong.
it actually deserves an official release but it doesn't seem to happen sadly.
they probably think it's too extreme to sell well..

I'm listening to the track right now as I write a college paper. I can feel the hardcore, but I feel in my gut that it could be even more hardcore.

Haha at 1:45 I think he has his plant lighting synchronized to the music.

For my 2 cents I thought they did a great job on the soundtrack w/ Doom 16. You just gotta make sure your listening either with a good pair of cans or speakers that can capture that low frequency pulse that seems to be pounding throughout most the tracks, if you aren't getting a good intense volume any music\soundtrack can sound underwhelming.

I love the syncro of the shotgun racking to go with the music on the first level:P8:

This.

When Doom (2016) came out, there were actually a ton of people who kept saying that the sound effects and foley in Doom 3 was better, and I really couldn't figure out why - Doom 3 has weak, almost anemic sounds with a really weird EQ.

And then I played them side-by-side on some cheap Logitech speakers and a pair of "gaming" headphones, and I realized why. Doom 3 was in an era where pro-audio and gaming just weren't well mixed. Cheap, beige no-name speakers and headphones pulled from Sony Discmans were still common in the early '00s. Doom 3 sounds really, really decent on cheap speakers.

Doom (2016) basically overloads the low-end on 2 way and cheaper 2.1 speakers, and sounds abrasive in cheap cans, because, unlike Doom 3, it was released in an era where most Techtubers and tech writers are recommending a decent pair of studio headphones, or at least expensive gaming headsets.

You need good gear to get good sound out of it, becuase it was mastered with the assumption that you will have good gear to play it with.

My rig doubles up for music pro and I always play through my studio monitors for that big immersive sound. I can't fault the music but imho the weapon sound effects seem to lack oomph. I'm not sure if along with the signal processing they have passed the sound effects thrrough a high pass filter and rolled off a few sub frequencies.Maybe so it doesn't clash with the low end of the music.

Firing a shotgun into someones face at point blank range feels more satisfying when you can actually feel the low end pass through you after discharging a shell.
I thought the music during the 1st phase of the Hell Guard boss fight was pretty f*ckin' badass

Not sure where the got the video/camera angles for this, but it's decent if a little higher pitched than I normally go for:

that Mick Gordon fella is quite a nice guy. had talked with him recently, because I requested his help in finding the name of that one music cue that plays during the Return-to-the-London-Nautica chapter of "Wolfenstein: The New Order". he said he'll send me the name when he gets some free time as he was quite busy when I initially contacted him.

It's surprisingly hardcore. But still trying to appeal to "wider audience" because that's what AAA games have to do, so there is some wuss elements. But how often there's been music this aggressive and heavy in AAA games? I can't recall any.

I'm loving the soundtrack, could be better but already better than 99% of games.

Imo best song, especially the riffs starting from 1:00 + the melody. How often you want to headbang into game music? I can't recall that happening err... like ever before this.

Another strong track is Rip & Tear. Doesn't pale in comparison to "real" metal bands.

Sidenote, people massively overhype and over-nostalgize the original Doom music.

It had exactly ONE good track, the E1M1 track. Which had pathetic imitation of heavy metal guitars, with cheesy AF Soundblaster sounds. Desperately trying to sound like distorted, palm muted metal guitars. And it didn't have much other, than one good riff. No compositional progression.

Rest of the music was pretty generic, people just hype it because it was original and they want to be hipsters, despising everything new. DOOM (2016) absolutely demolishes the original soundtrack in every aspect, soundwise and ESPECIALLY composition wise.

Not HC enough? Listen your own then, and disable music. Not every gamer is into metal / hc, while probably if they are into DOOM they're more likely into that too.

I agree, there are some heavier non AAA titles though. Deat Goat has a pretty heavy and diverse soundtrack. Slain ehh it's decent but not as heavy as it's made out to be. Over on the hatred board there's pretty decent listings under the Soundtracks to Murder by thread.

Mick Gordon the guy responsble for Doom's soundtrack also did the Wolfenstein TNO soundtrack, and according to his wiki is being tapped for 2017 Prey
