[Solved! Possibly] Getting Horizontal lines while running DOOM
I seem to be having an issue while playing DOOM recently. I've noticed these horizontal lines appearing on my screen at certain times during play. Usually when looking at distance or darkened environments. At first I thought it was a problem with my display, but I took screenshots and they appear in those as well, which tells me they might be a problem with either my graphics card (Which is a PNY Nvidia GTX960) or just DOOM itself. This is the screenshot in question that I took.

The lines appear most prominently there in the area just below the open flame. They also appear on the barrel of the gun as well.

Now, if I lower my resolution, the darker lines become spaced out greatly. If I raise my resolution, there's not much of a change (beyond sever screen flickering if I push my resolution too high for my display to handle, which defaults at 1366x780)

Turning V-sync on or off doesn't affect it either.

HOWEVER. I have noticed that if I switch the game to windowed mode, the lines more or less disappear. Especially if I run at a resolution of 1280x720 while windowed. (This is technically the resolution of my HDTV, which is only 720p)

I'm just curious if anyone else has encountered this problem. Is it a problem with DOOM itself? Or could this be a graphical issue? My desktop is only a few weeks old and the 960 card less than that. So I'm dubious to write it off as a card fault.

I will however say that I have not replaced the original stock 500w PSU. And I'll admit, I've never entirely rewired a desktop besides placing in the 960 card and installing the supplemental power supply. I am curious if a PSU fault might also cause the problem.

So far however, this only seems to appear in DOOM.

Ok, update! I finagled with the settings to see if I could remove this graphical artifact. And it seems I may have hit on a solution. By turning the Direction Occlusion OFF it seems to have removed the lines. I will keep playing though to see if they pop up again, for now though, this seems to have worked.

I'm looking but I can't see what you're referring to. I looked everywhere including just below the flame and it all seems fine to me. Do you have another example to provide?

Of course.

I wonder if it's an artifact of scaling down the textures. Normally I'm playing at 1080p full ultra/nightmare settings and I don't see any kind of strange patterns, at least they aren't noticeable enough for me to see. Anyhow, I downgraded the graphics to 720p and I'm seeing artifacting occur but mine are vertical lines. The most pronounced I could find quickly is in this pic in the sand directly ahead of me:

I bounced around to a few other areas in the map and can see it repeating. Even faintly on a wall slightly lower right of the Vorus sign.

I'm not sure if there's a "fix" per se to eliminate it, but I can agree with you that it can happen. I certainly don't think you have a hardware problem, though.

Aye, that looks about like what I'm seeing. Albeit vertical instead of horizontal. And in the same places too. I first noticed it on the Argent Facility level. And it seems to pop up to the most on sandy textures.

Knowing that you managed to make this occur just changing some settings though puts me a great deal at ease. At least now I now it's not likely my hardware, and just DOOM.

I'm also wondering if it might be a shadow effect as well. My system defaults at medium setting for shadows. I'll finagle with the settings to see if I can't get a solution to this.

Thank you though for testing that out. I was hoping someone would to at least prove that I wasn't going crazy thinking this was my computer :p

I think I figured it out. Try turning the Directional Occlusion off and see if they go away.

I think that fixed it. I turned it off, went back to those same areas and the lines were gone.

Good job. I wouldn't have thought to do that.

This suggests it's a lighting issue, I would think. The Directional Occlusion affects how lights impact surfaces.

I see those artifacts too. When I use the Vulkan API they get worse, suggesting that they came with the Vulkan release. It is definetely a bug that should be fixed by the developers.

Sorry for the necro but I just want to say Thank You for finding a fix for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Disabling directional occlusion really did fix the horrible tic tac toe grid of black lines.

I'm shocked it still pops up after all these years! I just assumed it was some sort of graphical bug :D
I'm glad the fix worked though! Now you can rip and tear with no distractions!
