Doom2016 crashes on startup
Ive been having problems to launch Doom2016 lately in form of the game blackscreening and instantly crashing after beeing launched. ive already tried to fix it on every single possible way, ive updated my gpu´s driver, ive reinstalled the game 6times, added different launch settings, tried to validate the files via steam but absolutly nothing worked.
theres no problem with my specs cause a friend of mine who is running the EXACT same pc can run Doom2016 just perfectly fine and i can litterally run any game just fine. im running a rtx3070 and the latest version of Nvideas game ready driver, i have no clue what to try anymore and im desperatly hoping that anyone of you guys can help me

i probably not fix your problem because you have pc. But if some one has similar problem on laptop with two graphic cards (one of them is integrated): 1) go to device menager 2) shut down integrated graphic card. 3) run again that card. 4) run the game. if it work once, will solve the problem permamently until next graphic software actualisation. It fixed my problem with doom 2016 vulcan and doom eternal.

Well, there could be a number of things happening and all of troubleshooting boils down to either hardware or software and is a process of elimination.

Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy answer to this kind of thing unless you're lucky enough to run into someone who has been in a similar situation and their solution also works for you, but if you're interested I could guide you through a troubleshoot.

Just a warning - it's a tedious process to troubleshoot.

The weird thing is that i have absolutly no issue running other games just like doom ethernal and ive tried all the possible solutions i found on the internet but nothing seemed to work for me but somehow Doom 2016 crashes without some kind of a error message telling me whats wrong.

Awesome, happy to help. Sorry to hear about the covid, but I'm genuinely glad to hear that you're doing better..

With troubleshooting all issues are broken down into problems with hardware or software so we start with a broad scope and refine our focus as we attempt to hone in on the offending condition.

You seem pretty confident in your hardware and what info you have already provided tends to be more indicative of a software root cause so I'm going to assume the hardware is good at this time and start with software.

Note - I use Windows 10 x64 so all info provided will be for that OS, if you use a different version or are unsure of how to perform a specific OS task please refer to Google.

We're going to tackle this in segments.

[1] Please state your windows version and if it's fully updated.

[2] Do you use GeForce experience?

[3] Do you use Steam overlay?

[4] When your game cuts to black screen does your entire PC reboot or does Steam simply crash to the desktop? The answer is important.

[5] Launch Doom and immediately record the time of when it black screens... Now go into Event Viewer---->Administrative Events and ensure there aren't any "critical" events around that same time.

[6] Open up control panel and in category view go into Hardware and sound and look for a listing for your PC with an icon above it. When I installed windows I gave mine a unique name, but the default usually is "DESKTOP-XYXY" with X and Y being a series of letters and numbers. Please make sure the icon above your PC name doesn't have a yellow circle with a black exclamation point inside of it.

[7] Click Start then Run and launch an elevated command prompt with administrative privileges. Type sfc /scannow. This is to check the integrity of your essential OS files and may take a little bit of time to complete a scan.

[8] Open up another run box and type dxdiag. If the tool asks you to check the digital signature of your drivers click Yes. On the System tab check your DirectX version and on the Display tab test the functionality of DirectDraw & Direct3D (on Windows 10 the tool should test them automatically and then tell you if it found any problems in the notes box).

[9] Ensure you have the latest version of Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022 for both the x86 and x64 versions installed. The VS 2015-2022 x86 should be one installer package while the x64 should be another and both are on micrsoft's website.

[10] Make sure you have windows 10 hibernation turned off and in the advanced power management settings that PCI-Express Link State is turned off.

That's it for now, I'll wait to see what results you post.

[1] I am using Win11Home x64.

[2] I had geforce experience installed but i uninstalled it in the process of reinstalling my gpu driver.

[3] Normally i do use the steam overlay but i also disabled it as part of my try to solve the problem.

[4] Well, after launching the monitor i selected to play on turns black after round about 5 seconds and my pc cooling fans rotate faster for a few seconds, steam does not crash tho, i can also see the DOOM icon in my taskbar for a few seconds untill it crashes. after crashing i get kicked out into my steam library. so my pc does not reboot and steam does not crash i suppose.

[5] I did everything according to your description and checked the event viewer for any new entries but there are not noch even close to the time i was testing (i also refreshed the event viewer multiple time in case it just didnt show up for some reason).

[6] I´ve checked the control panel and there was no yellow circle around my pc-icon.

[7] I am not quiete sure if i followed your instructions correctly because the window that is beeing opened after typing sfc /scannow instantly crashes. it litterally just flashes on my screen for a fracture of a second.

[8] The tool just finished its check and i checked DirectX, DirectDraw & Direct3D and all of them were listed as aktive and funktioning.

[9] I just checked but it seems like i didn´t even have visual studio installed. just installed the correct version.

[10] These settings were truned on - i turned them off.

First of all thank you very much for helping me and sending me different solutions that could have worked to solve my Doom2016 problem. Unfortunatly nothing changed, after going through your list and rebooting my pc Doom2016 still crashes right after beeing launched and i am starting to feel like my case with Doom2016 is just "doomed" ;D :steamfacepalm: .Is there any chance that the steam family feature messed something up? I am wondering because 2 years ago i was able to run Doom2016 without having any issues and i was using my old pc back then without the steam family feature enabled.

If I'm being honest I wasn't really expecting any of that to solve your problem, I was doing testing trying to gather more information and see if I could build a working theory based upon your testing results.

Now let me process through your results.

[1] Your OS may be a large contributing factor to your problem. Win 11 is still not in full release and is still only a late stage beta. There have been reports of compatibility issues with random apps so it's not too hard to imagine that all but literally one game would be working.

Not saying this is the answer, but I wouldn't be surprised if Win 11 is playing a part especially if your old PC was running Win 10.

[2] Good, the GeForce experience is an unnecessary resource hog so keep it off your system.

[3] OK, for the time being keep steam overlay disabled.

[4] This is good in the sense that the problem is more than likely software related. So far it's looking like it's a driver / game / steam related issue.

[5] This was a Longshot, but it was worth a shot to see if event viewer might be able to give any additional insight.

[6] Good, you didn't want to see the yellow circle with the black exclamation point which means there is an improperly configured device controller or missing drivers usually obscure system or chipset drivers.

[7] Now this is the big one. The "sfc" command - System File Checker - looks for integrity violations in your windows resource files and if it's crashing... well, it damn sure isn't a good thing LOL.

Try again, but let's try another way specifically for Win 11. Press Win + X then select Windows Terminal (Admin). Another menu will appear and using the down arrow on the keyboard select Command Prompt and finally type the sfc command once again.

If the window still crashes after typing sfc /scannow then the chances it being a problem with your OS just shot up to being greater than 80%.

[8] Good.

[9] Make sure you installed both the x86 and x64 versions of Visual Studio and any service packs for both.

[10] Good.

Tomorrow, when I'm off work and have a little more time I'm going to make another post on what I think you should do.

Until then I recommend retrying step #7 with the sfc command as well as reinstalling Steam.

When you reinstall Steam, turn off launch Steam at windows startup, turn off overlay, set Steam to launch your library at application start, don't enable the family feature and try Doom once more.

Well the more i think about my Doom2016 problem the weirder it becomes since as i said in my first entry to this discussion a friend of mine can play it with no problems what so ever
and he is running the EXACT same pc (also win11) as i am. We got it the same day from the same store. so in my theory i need to have installed something somehow blocking doom to launch. i do very appriciate your effort trying to help me but as i said the more i think about it the weirder it becomes. I need to have messed something on. I am going to uninstall every app ive downloaded already(thats not a lot anyways) and see if that fixes it.

Im also having the same problem not sure what the fix is. I was just playing this game about 6 month ago and it was fine.

I've been reading somewhere that some of the recent Nvidia drivers are broken or not properly optimized across the board.

I read a post where one user downloaded the latest Nvidia drivers, but did a "clean" installation by using Display Driver Uninstaller to get rid of fragments from previous driver versions. Then when running the installer selecting the "clean installation" option and, finally, uninstalling GeForce experience.

I would recommend trying that before researching further for another solution.

Fair Warning- the clean installation option during new driver install will remove all Nvidia control panel profile settings.

I just realized something, since i encountered my Doom issue i am not able to play Rust eather the game just crashes on startup similary to Doom 2016. What the hell is happening????? i just hope its "only" an issue with the currently newest version of the nvidea drivers.:steamsad:
