DOOM

Where's campaign coop?
Coop through the single player maps was something that make the original Doom fun. Where is that? Don't you dare try to say custom map coop.

Ransom Oct 19, 2017 @ 10:36am
also no one ever said that there is an main campaign coop...

I'm just asking why it's absent from the latest incarnation of Doom when it's predecessors had it. ♥♥♥♥, the least they can do is release Doom 4's source code and let us do some dirty work.

it isnt easy to design a campaign for coop... it wouldnt be balanced anymore if u just put another player in a single player campaign.

Yeah, like all the people who did dirty work in Doom 3 and RAGE.

No one mods idTech in any meaningful way.

there is also a 4 player coop mod on pc but it has broken the gameplay design... its not the same good experience like in singleplayer

There's a handful of Snapmap campaigns you can play with your friends. Try UltiDoom.
MooP Oct 19, 2017 @ 5:12pm
They never said main game was coop, it just allowed people to build coop things in Snapmap...

Ransom. I'm writhing in pain at reading your comment. You never played the original doom. That is apparent to me right away. The original Doom had coop, and the way they made it more challenging was through adding more monsters that ONLY SPAWN IN MULTIPLAYER. So don't go telling me "adding coop is hard" when you don't know as much about Doom as you might pompously think you do. I've been playing Doom for sixteen years. Granted there are people older than me who have played it since it was released, but sixteen years is still a lot of time devoted to Doom.

I played Doom at release.

I was also lucky enough to have played MP quite frequently.

Co-op was fun in classic Doom. But it wasn't polished, it wasn't objectively as good as solo, and it was not what would now be considered a "finished product".

Adding more mobs didn't make it "good". It made it playable.

You simply could not release a game like that now without it getting panned by critics and players alike. They tried it with Shadow Warrior 2. Same exact strategy - spawn more and tougher mobs while changing nothing else.

Guess what? Despite it having gunplay at or above the level of Doom (2016), the co-op was - you guessed it - panned by critics and gamers alike.

It can be mindless fun for a few minutes, but it does not play like something that was "designed" for co-op, and neither did classic Doom. SW2, and classic Doom, feel like SP games that someone did a ghetto mod for co-op into. Kind of like the Fallout 3 MP mod.

Games designed for co-op have a different design, requiring active and smart playing from both humans. Look at a game like Trine 2. It is desiged fundamentally differently than a single player platformer. You want shooters? Look at every co-op or team-oriented shooter with any degree of success (L4D2, Borderlands, Portal 2, etc.). They either have distinct challenges and puzzles that require two (or more) people to execute, or they use a class-based structure where the abilites of both are needed for survival.

Dropping an extra player into a SP-designed game works, and can be fun, but it doesn't make a good game. As much as Doom (2016)'s MP already nerfed its review scores and created an entire campaign of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bandwagoning in the community, a slapped on co-op mode would have made it even worse.

And since co-op is not really a highly marketable commodity in todays games, spending the money and time to develop a properly co-op campaign would have made little sense. It wouldn't have expanded the user base in any meaningful way.

ive play id software games (like wolenstein3d and commander keen) before the release of doom and if i remember correctly they add coop with a patch and they also add an ipx tool for network connecting.
ive played the originals alot in coop and i can remember a situation where one of five cyberdemon has entered a small elevator where the spawnpoint was and it took more as 30 min to kill him bcs we only respawn with the pistol in front of the cyberdemon, we could only shot one or two times and die again and again and again before we kill him ^^
ye only add more enemys for coop play its a rly well designed concept ;P

really, to design a good coop campaign is very different from the design of a single player campaign. sure it was funny to play coop but it has broken the game design...
