Mouse wheel and buttons stop responding
On a PC (Windows), I use the mouse wheel to change weapons and throw grenades.

In some situations, where the action gets hot (lots of monsters on the fight, fireballs flying and explosions all around, etc), the mouse wheel gets stuck (no longer changes weapon on roll, and no longer throws grenades on press), the mouse buttons stop responding (no longer fire your weapon), and even the F and G keys stop working (but the moving keys work fine).

If I pause the game, and go back to windows for a while, the mouse is working fine.

If I resume the game, these button+wheel+keys are still stuck in the game - so the fight is lost :-(

This problem persists for over 3 years. I've swapped mouse, motherboard and CPU (from an AMD FX-93XX for a faster Ryzen 2700 CPU), and still the problem persists (even more frequently). (I play with VSync off, if that matters. Vulkan performance on an AMD RX480 at 21:9 is amazing).

I've seen other people with similar problems, but not exactly the same.
Is it just me ?

mouse?
jpluis Nov 11, 2018 @ 8:25am
No it is not the mouse. (This is the third mouse I've tryed in 3 years, and it doesn't matter if its a cheap or expensive mouse). (The mouse works fine for any other app, or for the doom menus. Its really some sort of in-game bug).

So when you swapped motherboard, cpu did you reinstall windows ?

If you are using a freeware utility called named USB Device Tree Viewer ?

Make sure you shutdown every non essential program running.

Make sure you do not have a controller plugged in.

Your problem sounds like it's coming from a software that "save power" on your mouse and keyboard after a while.

Make sure you have all the xbox stuff in win 10 turned off. Overlay etc.

Never heard that problem on DOOM 2016 forum before.

When you switch hardware and a problem persist you have to look at the hardware that you did not change OR you have to think about any software that you install reinstall. Could be a software too. Might be a software you been using for 3 years.

No. Windows now has problems shutting down (it does not shutdown. When asked to shutdown it "blacks out", and reboots after 10min)... but I am not going to spend a lot of money in a new Windows license, just because the old CPU blew up while inside the warranty period, and the vendor had no replacement for it. (Except for the shutdown / reboot, the windows seems fine. And the DOOM mouse problem existed before).

No.

The problem persists even if I am running no more Windows apps (that I start myself).

I don't quite know what that is, but I do not have any game controllers. (Not even the android phone charging on USB).

Seems unlikekely. It always happens when the DOOM fight is at its highest moments (lots of explosions, flames, particle effects). Not at any other time.

I've turned on VSync, so that the frame rate is limited to 60fps, but to no help.

I don't have an Xbox, and I don't think I have any related Xbox software (that I've installed myself).
(I have virtualbox installed, but is usually not running when I play doom).

I've seen other "wheapon wheel stuck" posts before, but not like my problem.

May be, but everything else works fine. Just DOOM 2016 has this problem on the most crowded fights.

Other games I've played on this PC are "Aliens Colonial Marines", and "Aliens vs Predator 2010", "DOOM 3 BFG", DOOM 1 and 2. All played fine (although I've had some corruption problem and restored files on "Aliens vs Predator" before once).

It definitely seems a DOOM mouse related bug, but I find it strange to be the only one.

(I have an older PC 2014 laptop i7 4900MQ, but the graphics board has less than 2GB, so it plays doom 2016 badly, and I don't use it for this game, so I have no other DOOM PC to compare).

Thanks a lot for trying to help.

I will keep looking for similar problems/solutions.

León Salvaje Nov 17, 2018 @ 7:42am
This is actually a bug, the only fix I know of is to pause and literally disconnect and reconnect your device, this can happen to any key or pad button, usually the talk key, swap key, or melee key

I have found that it’s more likely to bug out if you close the app and relaunch it rather quickly, but it can still happen at random

Although it is rather rare for me tbh

It seems that the tip from "León Salvaje" works. Pausing the game, then disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse works (it may help saving one of those long levels where the mouse wheel froze on the last fight).

Sorry, I spoke too soon. Sometimes unplugging the mouse (and keyboard) and plugging them back in does not solve the problem. Every other app (including the DOOM menus) work fine, except for the game, where the mouse buttons remain frozen (for the rest of the game). Oh well, another fight lost :-(

How about not using the wheel for weapon select. rebind the command or the weapon to a key stroke instead.
jpluis Dec 2, 2018 @ 4:23am
Next time it gets stuck, I will try to rebind keys, to see if it "releasees" the functionality.
Thumper Dec 2, 2018 @ 6:31am
If the mouse is programmable, disable the wheel scroll up n down, leaving only as MB 3. The weapon select is already the number keys across the top of the KB. When you play a game, we all have our "go to" weapon of choice. Rebind those few keys to suit your need. Include in that rebinding next n priv. weapon. You will, by doing this find weapons come up faster allowing you more freedom when moving without having to scroll to find what you want or need.

My mouse is not programmeable (AFAIK). (At least I attempted no such software at all. Let it be a "standard" mouse).

Just happened again, I paused the game, went to SETTINGS, MOUSE AND KEYBOARD, KEY BINDINGS, and assigned another key to firing (say, key 'B') but it does not work,
All weapon wheel Q, T, G, and firing keys F and now B, have no effect. (Movement keys ASDW , crouch C, Space jump, work fine). I have to die, and start the level again :-(

Changing weapons with T and G still change and display the BFG and Chainsaw icon on the H.U.D. right-down-corner, but my character is still holding the previous weapon (without changing weapon or firing).

Hell demons win again :-D

If you have a controller plugged in, disable it, if razer chroma is turned on, turn it off. thats as far as i can take you. beyond that some one else will have to reply.
jpluis Oct 6, 2019 @ 12:28pm
Just to update: rebbiding keys seems not to work. Today the mouse buttons got stuck again. I rebinded the fire key to be the letter N, but it did not work either (and Hell won :-).

Seems like some internal bug where some internal doom commands get disabled... either from mouse or keyboard, until I die, and restart the level. (Sometimes they get "unstuck" back to normal - if I live long enough, but I still did not identify what trick triggers it).
jpluis Nov 3, 2019 @ 12:53pm
Just to update: Seems that pressing TAB (showing the map) and then TAB again (back to the action) unfreezes the mouse wheel and the frozen keys. (Just had the chance to test it two times so far, but it seems to workaround the problem - just find some space to run away from the fight, TAB TAB, and get back to the fight :-)
SubZeRo666 Mar 29, 2021 @ 2:58pm
@jpluis Thanks, i had the same problem, pressing TAB indeed works!
