A megatexture takes around 256GB decompressed.
It's simply not practical.
And why should this be a factor in the decision to release the SDK? Many people won't be able to use the tools, therefore no one should be able to use the tools?
RAGE had a full SDK, and had lower technical barriers than current idTech.
No one used them. The RAGE modding scene is possibly the saddest modding scene in PC history.
Even SDKs need some polish before release, and it really doesn't make any sense to spend resources on something that with near certainty won't be used.
Right, but Rage didn't have the same history and brand recognition that Doom has. As it is possible it wouldn't gain much traction, it should simply be released with a disclaimer basically saying "If you can figure it out, great. If not, oh well." There is very little reason to not release it in some form or another.
There is also no incentive to do it under those conditions.
Incentive to mod or release the SDK?
Release the SDK.
But if ID can do something to foster a community around their game, and help keep it relevant with almost zero effort, there is no reason to not release it "as is".
also the complexity of used technologies need a team of moders unless u only wanna mod small things like u also could do with snapmap
What's not practical is taking up nearly 100 gigs of harddrive space for one game. I'd Software has been pretty liberal with the idea of utilizing all our SSD/HDD space for rooms shaped no better than Quake designs with textures they don't re-use often. Neat to look at, but I miss clever level designs..
100GB is nothing. You don't even have to install DOOM on a SSD either. The difference of 5 to 10 seconds off the loading time is nothing.
DOOM is taking .5% of my total space and most modern games are around that or even bigger.
Better get with the time or it will leave you in the dust.
They did a great job compressing this game from terabytes to 70GB if you ask me. That's one hell of a compression.
Next time you see a 3TB HDD deal at 50 bux buy it.
Well that's some good news.
You wouldn't have link, would you? Sound like an interesting interview.
Wow, that really gives me some hope. Even if it isn't Doom: E, maybe it will be refined enough for Doom 3, or whatever we should refer to it as, lol. I'd also like a source for the info.
